Cloud Software as a Service, Platforms | a computer hobbyist's ...

This is an overview of technologies that presently deliver software as a service over "the cloud", aka the internet. It partially answers the question of what platforms to buy for today and future needs, and compares with hosted apps versus operating a server internally. The use case is implementing a LAN for a call center, with predictive dialing.

Two buzzwords define the present and future of how software is sold: Software as a Service (SaaS) and "the cloud". They both mean delivering software services over the internet, and billing by use (rather than by selling the user a copy of the software). It's rented software that's operated remotely - but that's not quite as cool sounding as "sass" or "the cloud." I'll call it saas for this article.

Some History

Saas was the logical extension of the trend toward "thin clients" or "client server computing" or "remote desktop" where the user's PC doesn't run the software anymore, and the software is run on a central server. Organizations moved in this direction because it's cheaper to manage dozens of virtual desktops on one server computer than it is to send someone to a dozen offices to install software and fix computers.

(Because it was cheaper, Microsoft decided to price it's Terminal Services product dearly. At one time, it seemed to cost over $300 per user to have a thin client. So all the money saved by buying a slightly less expensive "thin client" ended up going to these license costs.)

Well, it turned out that with fast internet, you could do remote desktop over the internet, and instead of talking to a server in the office, you could use a server across the country. The next logical step was renting out software over the internet.

The three dominant technologies or companies involved in remote desktop are Microsoft's RDP, Citrix, and VNC. They all do basically the same thing - they shoot a picture of a remote desktop to your computer. RDP and VNC are pretty much generic commodity software today. Citrix has moved toward using VNC.

Web Browsers

At the same time that, web browsers were becoming better platforms for delivering software. Early web-based applications like Hotmail and ecommerce websites proved that it was possible to deliver software through a web browser. The breakthrough web application was Google Maps, which showed it was possible to create interactive, graphical software similar to traditional desktop software, and deliver it through a web page.

Due to the huge numbers of users familiar with web browsers over anything else, web-based software is the main platform for delivering saas.

Platform Differences

One big difference between remote desktop and web apps is that remote desktop uses very few computing resources, while web apps use a lot. You can run remote desktop on any PC built after 2000, and there are numerous cheaper ways to go (like Raspberry Pi). Web applications have varying requirements, but generally, if an app is new, it'll use more resources. Older apps that aren't upgraded with more features will use fewer, of course. I'm using a 4-core AMD running at around 1.6Ghz, with 4 Gigs of RAM, and it runs everything fine. In short, you need a real PC of some kind, and at least 1 Gig or RAM.

The other big difference between remote desktop and web apps is platform diversity. There are only two remote desktop platforms: RDP and VNC. Both are old and stable, and sometimes interchangeable. In contrast, there are at least four major web browsers, and three operating system platforms (if we ignore mobile platforms). There are also three different application development technologies. So there are many potential permutations of platforms!

Here are the lists of each:
Web Browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari
Operating Systems: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
Application Technologies: HTML 5, Flash, Java

The market today favors Windows, Internet Explorer, Firefox, HTML 5, and Flash. Flash is declining, however, as HTML 5 has emerged as the platform of choice. HTML 5 basically works okay on all the browsers, but not totally identically. What is HTML 5? Read What is HTML 5.

(As noted above, Flash is in decline. So is Java - it's become a niche technology at best, despite many efforts. It's a technology that will have appeal mainly to enterprises with staff who know Java, and with Java server applications.)

When saas companies or web app companies decide what platforms to target, they balance the cost of developing for a platform against the number of users who use the platform and the overall quality of the platform.

They basically end up supporting Firefox or maybe Chrome browsers, and Internet Explorer. The former are chosen because the application developers like those browsers, and Internet Explorer is supported because it reaches the widest market of people who either buy cheap computers and don't install software, or who operate enterprise LANs and have software budgets.

Safari on OS X, and likewise Firefox and Chrome on Linux, are supported fairly well for platforms with a small fractions of the market, mainly because developers like these operating systems. Each platform has, at best, 5% of the market, but are popular with developers.

The general customer should use Windows, because there's no guarantee of support for the niche browsers, while there is always going to be support for IE on Windows, if you're willing to pay for it. You maximize your options by using the dominant platform.

If you get the impression that many web developers don't like Internet Explorer and Windows, you would be correct.

Web development companies that wish to make money, however, like supporting Internet Explorer and Windows, because they're popular. It's all about money.

So, unless your goal is to hire web developers or computer geeks, there's not much point to using anything but Windows. (Conversely, if you want to attract talent, you should consider not forcing them to use Windows.)

Performance

One other reason why web-based apps are leading against remote desktop hosted apps is that web based apps require fewer server resources. Most of the work is done in the web browser. To host a remote desktop, you basically need around 512,000,000 bytes of RAM, some disk, and maybe 1/10th of a CPU's time. To host a web app, you need a lot less, like maybe 100,000 bytes of RAM, some disk behind a database, and maybe 2 seconds of the CPU's time every minute (and really, probably a lot less than that).

That's all related to the relative needs of the computer for the two types of platforms, as listed above: in remote desktop, the server does most of the work; in web apps, the browser does most of the work.

If you're a development company, it's obviously better to have the customer's computer do more work, while leaving your server free to handle more customers. That means you can price your service cheaper, and attract more customers. The web browser wins. Deploying new applications to a general market via a remote desktop just doesn't make economic sense.

Internal Cloud

You can flip the situation by buying your own server and hosting internally. One product like that is Vicidialer, the open source dialer. You spend thousands of dollars up front, but then you don't pay the costs of renting software. It can make sense in the long term. The main risk is that you'll need to hire someone to service the hardware and network, and that will be expensive.

If you host your own service, it might make sense to use remote desktop. It saves you from buying expensive computers and Windows. You can avoid having hard disks, and just netboot off a server, and run RDP or VNC to virtual instances on a server.

My sense, though, is that the market is moving towards renting software. Being able to change vendors quickly is an advantage to the customer. Over time, more specialist vendors may emerge to service your niche.

The trade-off is cost: in the long run renting may cost more than buying outright.

Swedish Prime Minister Makes Gambling Legislation Pledge ...

Sweden?s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt signed a statement this week signalling his intent to take action to change gaming regulation, following a report by the National Audit Office released in June 2012.

The proposals should be announced in June this year and will be implemented in legislation in mid-2014.

The main motivation for the changes is the report?s assessment that ?an increase in pathological gambling has been identified among certain groups of gamblers.?

The report identifies competition amongst unauthorized and illegal gambling providers as being the main risk factor behind possible increases in the number of people with gambling problems.

The proposals due by May 31 are therefore likely to target specific high risk areas where the current system is seen to provide weak social protections, rather than radically overhaul the current system.

Specifically named in the report was state-controlled Svenska Spel, one of a few authorized gambling providers in the country. It offers sports betting, bingo, casino and poker, both online and in thousands of terminals in pubs, restaurants and bingo halls. It also operates four casinos through subsidiary Cosmopol Casino.

In late 2005, it was given the green light to run online poker, by mid-2006 Svenska Spel was running an independent online poker room using GTECH G2 (then Boss Media) software. Today it is the only such licensed poker room in Sweden. It is only open to Swedish residents, and players must set a daily ?budget? and set a maximum number of hours they can play.

Despite these restrictions, and the ease of access players have to unlicensed sites, the poker room has maintained a healthy player pool, similar in size to Ongame and Bodog, and larger than many other segregated poker rooms like PartyPoker.FR and iPoker.IT.

However, Svenska Spel came in for particular criticism in the report for not balancing its twin aims of commercial success and social consciousness in marketing its gaming products, noting: ?[Svenska Spel] does not currently take sufficient account of the risks involved with pathological gambling.?

The report recommended that measures need to be taken to ensure that Svenska Spel is successful in providing a safe and legal alternative to illegal gambling, while simultaneously ensuring that the marketing does not encourage problem gambling.

The authors recognize the difficulty with combining the two aims: ?? it is unclear whether a more proactive approach can be combined with effective social responsibility measures on the gambling market.?

There is also strong criticism of the current licensing system which is described as ?vague? and lacking the ?prerequisites? to be effective.

From the criticisms in the report it can be deduced that the reform proposals are likely to create a new licensing and supervision system, possibly with greater sanctions on unauthorized providers. The government?s input into Svenska Spel?s strategy is likely to be increased to exercise more control over how it markets its gambling products to the public.

As a member state of the European Union the changes are also likely to reflect the aspirations for good gaming regulation that the EU Commission embodied in its Action Plan on Online Gaming.

Low-cost Chinese film sets new record

(AP) ? A low-budget, domestically produced comedy has unexpectedly become the highest-grossing Chinese film to date.

Chinese state media say the wacky road movie "Lost in Thailand" has grossed more than 1 billion yuan ($160 million) since its Dec. 12 debut. The official Xinhua News Agency, citing an independent monitor of box office figures, said Wednesday that it also beat James Cameron's "Titanic" in 3-D, the most popular foreign film in 2012, in Chinese theaters.

Set in Thailand, the film tells the story of two businessmen who go searching for their boss in the north, and then link up with a tourist eager to explore the country. It is filled with slapstick humor and action scenes.

The previous record for a domestic film was 726 million yuan set by "Painted Skin 2."

Storm returns to TV 3 weeks after grill accident

With a wave of her bandaged left hand, and boosted by well wishes from Dr. Phil, Chris Evert and even a young woman she once babysat, Hannah Storm returned to a most comfortable setting ? talking in front of a TV camera.

The ESPN anchor hosted the Rose Parade telecast Tuesday in her first on-air appearance since sustaining first- and second-degree burns to her face, hands, chest and neck in a propane gas grill accident Dec. 11.

"I was just so happy to be there, so grateful," she said by phone from Pasadena, Calif. "It took a lot out of me, but it went great."

Storm lost roughly half her hair in the accident outside her home in Connecticut. She wore extensions for the two-hour show on ABC. Storm's eyebrows and eyelashes also were burned off. When a makeup artist brushed on her first eyebrow, "I wanted to kiss her, it looked so good," she said.

This was the fifth time Storm served as TV host for the Rose Parade. She said working alongside her former "SportsCenter" co-anchor, "Good Morning America" host Josh Elliott, eased her way.

She said it was to her benefit that she could ad-lib through the show. She's left-handed, and the burns and an infection make it hard to turn pages on a script or take notes.

"I could be myself today, just talking and reacting to what I saw," she said. "It was a very familiar place."

She was warmed, too, by having her three daughters with her in California ? 15-year-old Hannah, 14-year-old Ellery and 11-year-old Riley. There are, incidentally, four generations of Hannahs in the family, with Storm's mother and grandmother also sharing that first name.

"It was good that the girls got to see mommy doing what she usually does. Being on TV, being on the set, that brings a sense of normalcy," she said.

Storm cautioned that her return to the air just three weeks after being injured was far from normal. The fiery explosion left flame marks on her neck, and doctors have told her to keep the most seriously burned areas out of direct sunlight for six months. Dressing and showering are still difficult, too.

"This hair wasn't real, these eyebrows weren't real," she said. "It's important to remember burns take a long time to heal."

During the telecast, she thanked everyone from the Trauma and Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center who treated her. Her husband, NBC sportscaster Dan Hicks, rearranged his schedule to stay home during her recovery.

Storm has received bunches of calls, texts, emails, tweets and other supportive messages. Tennis star Mardy Fish, ESPN colleagues Dick Vitale and John Kruk, and the Rev. John Jenkins, president of her alma mater Notre Dame, were among those reaching out to the popular broadcaster and producer.

Storm will wait to see when she rejoins "SportsCenter" in Bristol, Conn. She hoped to anchor Sunday, but wants to see how she feels this week.

In the meantime, Storm plans to turn her ordeal into an opportunity to talk about how to safely operate propane gas grills.

Storm was injured when she tried to re-ignite the grill after the flame had gone out. She shut off the gas and when she turned it back on "there was an explosion and this wall of fire came at me in an instant."

Storm said two people she worked with Tuesday said they'd been burned in similar accidents.

"A lot of people are afraid of grills," she said. "I think this will be a good chance to talk about safety."

Bowl Capsules

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Aaron Murray threw five touchdown passes to set a Georgia bowl record, including two in the fourth quarter, and the sixth-ranked Bulldogs beat No. 23 Nebraska 45-31 in the Capital One Bowl on Tuesday.

Murray shook off a pair of first-half interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and passed for 427 yards ? also a Bulldogs bowl record ? against the nation's top-ranked passing defense. He was named the game's most valuable player.

Georgia (12-2) reached 12 wins for the third time in school history.

Nebraska (10-4) lost its third consecutive bowl game, and finished the season with two straight woeful defensive performances. The Cornhuskers lost the Big Ten championship game 70-31.

The Cornhuskers led 24-23 at the half, but committed two of their three turnovers in the final 30 minutes. Taylor Martinez had two interceptions and two touchdown passes for Nebraska and Rex Burkhead rushed for 140 yards in his final college game.

Nebraska's offense finished with 443 total yards, but the Bulldogs defense was stingy when it needed to be. They sacked Martinez five times, with All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones notching two. Damian Swann had both Georgia interceptions.

OUTBACK BOWL

NO. 11 SOUTH CAROLINA 33, NO. 19 MICHIGAN 28

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Connor Shaw led South Carolina to the brink of victory and Dylan Thompson carried the Gamecocks over the hump in the Outback Bowl.

Thompson came off the bench to throw a 32-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds left Tuesday, enabling South Carolina to tie a school record for victories with a 33-28 win over No. 19 Michigan.

Thompson replaced Shaw during the winning drive, covering the final 43 yards after Shaw began the march from his own 30. Devin Gardner's third TD pass of the game had given Michigan a 28-27 lead.

Shaw threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns after missing South Carolina's regular season finale with a left foot sprain. Thompson led the Gamecocks (11-2) to a victory over their archrival, and threw for 117 yards and two TDs.

Gardner threw for 214 yards in his fifth start for Michigan (8-5) since Denard Robinson injured his right elbow late in the season. Robinson took some snaps at quarterback and attempted his first passes since Oct. 27, but lined up mostly at running back and rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries.

Ace Sanders caught TD passes of 4 yards from Thompson and 31 yards from Shaw, who completed 18 of 26 passes before limping off on the final drive. The speedy receiver had nine catches for 92 yards and also scored on a 63-yard punt return ? one of four plays over 50 yards that Michigan yielded.

GATOR BOWL

NO. 21 NORTHWESTERN 34, MISSISSIPPI ST. 20

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Behind huge interceptions early and late, Northwestern beat Mississippi State 34-20 in the Gator Bowl and snapped college football's longest postseason losing streak.

The Wildcats (10-3) earned their first bowl win since 1949, ending a nine-game losing skid that was tied for the longest in NCAA history. They also celebrated double-digit victories for the first time since the 1995 Rose Bowl season.

Quentin Williams returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game and Nick Vanhoose set up a late touchdown with a 39-yard interception return. Those plays were the difference in a back-and-forth game that featured more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (six).

Northwestern's two-quarterback system kept the Bulldogs (8-5) off balance most of the day.

Scrambler Kain Colter ran for 71 yards, making up for his two interceptions. Backup Trevor Siemian threw for 120 yards and an interception, and also ran for a score.

Even with the turnovers, they were more efficient than Mississippi State's Tyler Russell.

Russell completed 12 of 28 passes for 106 yards, with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He had thrown only six picks in the first 11 games this season. LaDarius Perkins ran 19 times for 84 yards for the Bulldogs, and freshman Josh Robinson added 91 yards on seven carries.

HEART OF DALLAS BOWL

OKLAHOMA STATE 58, PURDUE 14

DALLAS (AP) ? Clint Chelf threw three of Oklahoma State's five touchdown passes and the Cowboys shook off a disappointing Big 12 finish by dominating Purdue 58-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Cowboys, a year removed from a Fiesta Bowl win that capped the best season in school history, forced five turnovers and had another short TD drive after a 64-yard punt return from Josh Stewart.

It was the biggest bowl win for Oklahoma State since coach Mike Gundy was the quarterback in a 62-14 rout of Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. The Cowboys (8-5) missed out on upper-tier bowls after narrow losses in their last two Big 12 games.

With former Purdue quarterbacks Drew Brees and Kyle Orton watching, Robert Marve didn't get to 100 yards passing until Oklahoma State led 45-0 as Purdue (6-7) fell to 0-4 on New Year's Day.

Leading 28-0 at halftime, Oklahoma State erased any lingering doubt three plays into the second half when Justin Gilbert stripped Purdue receiver O.J. Ross on a short completion. The loose ball shot straight to Daytawion Lowe, who ran 37 yards down the sideline in front of the Purdue bench for a 35-0 lead.

Oklahoma State's 58 points were the most in a bowl game at historic Cotton Bowl Stadium, topping the 55 scored by Keyshawn Johnson and Southern California against Texas Tech in 1995.
