Apple security update ditches Snow Leopard, Windows users

Last week, Apple released the latest version of its Safari Web browser, patching more than 100 vulnerabilities. But if you're running an older version of Mac OS X or any version of Windows, you're in for some harsh luck.

Safari 6 is available only for the brand-new OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and its predecessor, OS X 10.7 Lion, which itself is barely a year old.

Users of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, which as of June was running on nearly 40 percent of all Macs, apparently won't be getting the upgrade.

As for Safari for Windows, Apple has removed all traces of it from its website.

A request to Apple for comment was not immediately returned.

"The latest version of Safari is available in Mountain Lion," states text at the very bottom of the official Safari page. "The latest version of Safari for Lion is available through Software Update."

[ How Far Behind Is Apple's Security? ]

Age discrimination
That seems unfair, at best, to security researcher Joshua Long, who used Sophos' Naked Security blog to take Apple to task.

"There's no warning in either the browser itself or Apple Software Update on either [Windows or Snow Leopard] that Safari likely won't be updated," Long wrote. "Users have no way of knowing that their browser has at least 121 unpatched vulnerabilities and is no longer safe to use."

According to Apple's own documentation regarding the security updates, almost all those vulnerabilities expose users to attack by maliciously crafted Web pages, to which users of Snow Leopard and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard would presumably also be susceptible.

Instead, Apple's leaving them out in the cold. That's bad, considering how deeply Safari is embedded into the OS X operating system compared to third-party browsers like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Yet Long shouldn't be surprised. Apple's unstated policy is to support only two OS X versions at a time: the current version, and the one just before that.

Now that Mountain Lion has been released, it would make sense, at least on Apple's terms, that the company is supporting only that and 10.7 Lion.

As for Safari for Windows, it has a very small user base and never got above 1 percent of Windows users. (iTunes for Windows is still supported.)

Even many Mac users don't use Safari, according to NetMarketShare.com, which shows that the market share of Mac OS X is substantially higher than the market share of Safari on all desktops and laptops.

Pattern of neglect?
A few months ago, the Flashback Trojan was whipping through the Mac user base, largely because Apple had neglected to update its Java build in a timely manner. Apple finally released Java patches ? but only for Lion and Snow Leopard.

Leopard users were left unpatched for six more weeks until enough anger built up online. Then Apple patched 10.5 as well.

To draw a contrast, Microsoft will be supporting Windows XP until April 2014, when that platform will be more than 12 years old.

To Apple's credit, its software is cheap: Full installations of Mountain Lion cost $20.

Any Mac less than five years old will be able to run Lion or Mountain Lion, though to get a Lion installation you might have to call Apple or go to an Apple retail store. There's no more Lion download link on the Apple site ? it's been "disappeared" along with Safari for Windows.

Apple may want to push its user base into upgrading to new software and new machines. But it shouldn't have to jeopardize the security of its older customers to do so.

Olympic visitors were told on Sunday to avoid non-urgent text messages and tweets during events because overloading of data networks was affecting television coverage.

IOC Communications Director Mark Adams told The Guardian; it appeared the problem lay with oversubscription on one particular network, and talks had taken place in an attempt to share more of the data. ?It?s a network issue, and it is that which we are working on,? he said.

There are 10 Olympic track cycling events (five for each gender) that will be held in the purpose built velodrome. There are two road cycling races at London 2012: the road race and time trial. BMX cycling events will also be held.

In other Olympic news, a bridge connecting London?s West Ham tube station to the Olympic Park will light up from the millions of feet traversing the bridge. The kinetic energy of footspteps is turned into light, using Pavegen tiles. The tiles only move 5 millimeters when stepped on, so daytime pedestrians may barely even notice them without looking down. Has Image Overtaken Music? | Epou

(CNN) ? Is Lady Gaga an artist?sure, she can play piano. She?s got some songwriting talent, too. But music isn?t what comes to mind when the former Stefani Germanotta is discussed. instead, it?s the attention-getting antics: The controversial videos. The in-your-face sexuality. The crazy concerts. The meat dress.is it about the music, or the Fame Monster?Rachel Weingarten wonders.?I don?t consider Gaga an artist,? the New York style consultant says, then reconsiders. ?Well, maybe she?s an artist for our time. Every generation gets the artist it deserves.?If that?s the case, Gaga has a lot of company.?They want to be famous, not make music,? says Lyndsey Parker, managing editor of Yahoo! Music, of some of the new breed. ?The music is just one facet of the celebrity.?It?s an indicator of societal shifts, she says. Now you can upload a video and receive immediate fame. So much for learning three chords and working your way up the ladder.?Now everyone expects overnight success, whether it?s because someone discovered your video on YouTube, or you went on a reality show,? she says.has the gimmickry gone too far? have we become numb to the emotion and the power of music? The stuff used to be about something, dammit, not a soundalike drone of manufactured robots, lip-synching amid falling tinsel.right? Art and authenticityWell, they call it ?show business? for a reason.Previous generations made less of a distinction between art and entertainment, observes Georgia Tech professor Philip Auslander.?In the ?40s, and I believe well into the ?50s and the rock ?n? roll era, the idea of what it was to be a musician wasn?t as pure and pristine as we seem to want to think of it now,? says Auslander, who?s written a study of glam rock. ?The idea that to be a popular musician is not just to stand up there and show off your ability as a musician, but to entertain in other senses ? that was very much a staple of what popular music performance was about.?Even the Beatles, who became much more decorous performers after Beatlemania hit, dominated the local scene during their Hamburg residency by turning up the volume, smashing stages and ? in a famous incident ? doing a show with John Lennon in his underwear, wearing a toilet seat around his neck.Of course, pop musicians have long been as much about entertainment as art ? but as times have changed, so have perceptions of where the line is drawn. to critics, MTV ? which arrived in the 1980s ? heightened the value of looks and slickness over ?authenticity,? with the image becoming more important than the music. and nowadays, in our 24/7 world of rapidly posted YouTube videos, instant MP3 releases, reality shows, lurking paparazzi and meat dress one-upmanship, it?s easier than ever for spectacle to overwhelm singing.it can be a false divide ? a glitzy video or elaborate stage show doesn?t mean the performer can?t play ? but it?s one that?s come to define some of the differences between rock and pop, says Auslander.?I think a lot of this stuff is specific to particular genres and subgenres of music, and the old distinction between rock and pop, where the people on the pop side are not expected to be authentic in the same way as the people on the rock side,? he says. It?s what?s led to the so-called ?rockist? point of view, he adds: that rock, which was album-oriented and ranged from earnest singer-songwriters to classically inspired progressive bands, was somehow superior to pop, which was found on singles and included bubblegum, disco, easy-listening and anything else likely to make the Top 40. Nowadays the genres are more blurred, but the prejudices remain: Rock is serious and therefore Art; pop is unserious and therefore ephemeral. It?s a distinction that?s long been disdained by performers themselves. as the old dictum, variously attributed to Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington, states: ?There are only two kinds of music: good and bad.?"I love a show. I want to be entertained,? says Matchbox Twenty?s guitarist, Paul Doucette, who praises the energy Lady Gaga brings to her concerts (and observes that ?she can back it up? with her talent). ?Don?t get up there and look like you?re not having a good time. I?ve seen enough of the shoegazing in my life. I want fun back in rock.? a new road to fameThe same goes for Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, whose band has been known to put on a show themselves ? complete with avant-garde, big-screen visuals, falling balloons and a giant ?space bubble,? a transparent ball containing Coyne from which he walks over the crowd.?That?s part of the fun of being in a rock band,? he says. ?If you?re lucky, you get to create an image.?And as for the image overwhelming the rest of it, he points out that, if he?s done his job right, every element works together so that the band and audience are satisfied. When this interview was conducted, the Lips were about to attempt to break the Guinness world record for most live concerts in 24 hours ? an arrangement that, despite the stunt aspects, the Lips were taking as seriously as any individual show.?People are going to pay real money, people are going to give us a lot of their time, so we don?t want it to be just hype ? it?s really got to be great,? he says. (For the record, the band got its record.)Coyne has an open-minded view about what characterizes ?art.?On the Lips? latest CD, ?The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,? the guests include such indie favorites as Nick Cave and Bon Iver, as well as Ke$ha, the ?Tik Tok? pop rapper disdained by the music press (?a faceless, anonymous pre-fabrication of a pop star,? wrote Slant?s Jonathan Keefe).?I think the world can have all kinds of things in it, and just because someone is popular doesn?t mean they?re more important in people?s minds,? Coyne says. ?(The audience) should pick what they think is speaking to them the most. If that?s a Lady Gaga, great for you. If that?s an obscure little artist that you know in your hometown, use that.?But,? he adds, ?it?s very difficult to resist the temptation of popularity. everybody likes it. these are all dynamics everybody struggles with. what art does, it lets you be free. there should be no judgment about you in that.? He audibly shrugs. ?But this is not the way people use music in the world.?It?s those divides ? between popular and niche, between wealthy celebrity and starving obscurity ? that keep injecting themselves into debates about music. moreover, now that the music business has been turned upside-down by technology, musicians must find their own path to exposure (which, presumably, is still the point).?The whole idea of a top-down market is gone,? says David Herlihy, a music and law professor at Boston?s Northeastern University. When his own band was on the circuit in the 1980s, there was a ?road map,? he says, one that had existed for a generation.?You needed the record label. you needed to go to the recording studio. you needed to get on the radio. you needed to be in record stores. you needed all these intermediaries. everybody I ever became aware of followed that map,? he says. ?And now technology has completely disintermediated the business, and so now you have music and art, and people who consume those things directly. therefore, it can go anywhere.? The starving artist?s dilemmaIt?s tremendously freeing for an artist, and also a little scary.Do you market directly to fans, the way someone such as Josh Rouse does? Do you make arrangements to license your work, the way Moby did? Do you make yourself into a brand, a la Madonna ? who?s veered so far into pure celebrity, Yahoo?s Parker says, that she and her colleagues couldn?t figure out whether to classify a Madonna story as ?music? or ?celebrity news?? Do you work with advertisers, extending your identity to other products and essentially using music as a platform to other things? It?s not necessarily a new idea ? the Beatles, after all, once had a clothing store ? ?a beautiful place where beautiful people can buy beautiful things,? Paul McCartney said at the time ? but the concept has reached new heights in our free-for-all age.Paul Greco, the director of music for advertising giant JWT, is responsible for putting musicians and their songs together with advertisers. It?s a beneficial relationship, he says: the artist gets exposure and financial support, and the product gets linked up with the artist ? and the artist?s fan base. Some products can be golden for musicians: Greco mentions the ?Apple effect,? in which the computer manufacturer made stars of Feist (?1234?) and the Ting Tings (?Shut Up and Let me Go?) through the use of their songs.Spreading the word in creative ways is a necessity these days, adds Renaud Skalli, who heads up artist and label relations for the year-old marketing firm my Love Affair.?The reason we started the firm is because the music industry was in a bad state,? he says. ?The artists needed someone on their side.?Though musicians appreciate the exposure, the prospect of tying their fortunes to a multinational conglomerate still makes some of them nervous. it calls to mind that old hippie-punk jeer: Sell-out.Ben Deily, a former member of the Boston post-punk band the Lemonheads, remembers when another Boston band, the Del Fuegos, made a beer commercial. He and his bandmates were appalled, he says.?You knew there was selling out, and then there was punk rock,? he says. (Deily now works in the advertising business.)?Sell-out? doesn?t come up much anymore, says Greco. ?Musicians are artists. But they don?t need to be starving artists,? he says. ?You have to make a living.? Band managementMatchbox Twenty?s Doucette has seen all sides of the equation. his band has played bars and stadiums, has been groomed by a record label and succeeded in the post-label era. Lead singer Rob Thomas has been a paparazzi magnet.Doucette says that commercialization comes with the territory.?A band is a brand. it sells music, it sells image, a lot of things. This is our product, this is what we do. The fact it has artistic integrity is what separates it,? he says. ?The difference is where the emphasis is.?For Doucette, the problem arises when music isn?t the point.?It does seem like there?s a little bit of, I want to become famous, then have a perfume line, make a record, be on a reality show. It?s more about being famous than it is about wanting to do music because that?s what you do, and then that opening you up to other possibilities. it depends on what your intention is.?But, he acknowledges, these are strange times for music.?We?re still in the Wild West of all this,? he says. ?People are still trying to figure out, how do people experience music now? there are so many different ways to do it, and how do you make that work? All these things fall into that ? the branding, the image, the importance of radio ? they?re all connected.?In the meantime, when it comes to public tastes and media coverage, the pendulum swings forward and the pendulum swings back.perhaps the most successful musician of the past year is the pianist Adele, whose performing and songwriting are equally personal and unadorned ? a throwback to the early ?70s singer-songwriters, or perhaps Norah Jones and Alicia Keys. sure, there?s been some celebrity chatter surrounding her ? she?s famously had to deal with weight issues ? but, in general, her authenticity (a word used advisedly) has worked to her advantage.?There?s still a market for that,? says Yahoo?s Parker. ?People say rock is dead, but things always are cyclical. I do feel it will take another Nirvana, another watershed rock band, and then all these technopop artists will get scared.?Besides, adds Doucette, if the music lasts, so will the artist who makes it.?Eventually Lady Gaga?s not going to be able to wear the meat dress,? he says. ?But she?s not going to have a problem, because she?s been, like, I can do this. and when (she) gives you a regular song, that?s going to be as shocking as the meat dress, with her sitting there at the piano with no crazy hat on.?Copyright CNN 2012

Apple Might Invest In Twitter! - Business Insider

Apple might invest "hundreds of millions of dollars" in Twitter, report Evelyn Rusli and Nick Bilton of the New York Times.

The two companies have reportedly held talks in recent months about Apple's making a strategic investment.

The investment could value Twitter at more than $10 billion, higher than the $8.4 billion valuation the company got in a big fund-raising last year.

Apple's efforts to break into social networking (e.g., Ping) have failed. The company has countered this by integrating Twitter and now Facebook into its operating systems.

Obviously, a big investment in Twitter would align Apple with Twitter in a way that might alienate (or disadvantage) Facebook.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo recently remarked that Twitter has "a truckload of money." A big investment from Apple would presumably increase this to "boatloads."

These are only talks, Bilton and Rusli report. So don't count any chickens just yet.

Delta shuts down Comair; workers given notice

Delta Air Lines is shutting down its shrunken, 35-year-old regional carrier Comair at the end of September as it switches to bigger jets and it is sending termination notices to its 1,700 remaining employees.

    1. Don't miss these Travel stories

      1. New vacation necessity: professional photographer?

With friends and family increasingly scrutinizing vacation photos via Facebook, some travelers are hiring professional photographers to capture lasting memories of their trip.

      5. Slideshow: London calling

Comair is down to 290 flights a day. More than 1,000 Comair employees are in the Cincinnati and northern Kentucky region, some 700 of those in Kentucky.

Comair has slashed its fleet, flights and workforce in the last seven years. Delta said the smaller regional planes are expensive to fly because they are not as fuel-efficient and cost more to maintain as the fleet ages.

"We just really couldn't get the cost structure to where we wanted to get it," said Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delta Connection and a former Comair president. "It ultimately was a cost issue; it wasn't a quality issue with Comair. They're a good airline, great employees, very innovative ... we just could not solve the cost issues."

Delta, based in Atlanta, had about 500 of the 50-seat regional jets in 2008 and plans to reduce that to 125 within two years. Most of that flying will be done by new 76-seat jets as well as the 117-seat Boeing 717sthat Delta is leasing from Southwest Airlines.

Delta said Friday that it has stopped flying 16 of the remaining Comair 50-seaters, and will lease the carrier's other 28 planes to other operators. Bornhorst said employees have 60-day termination notices. A small group of employees will remain after the Sept. 29 shutdown to handle details of the closure.

Comair handles only about 1 percent of Delta's flying, so the closure won't result in significant changes to Delta's network. Delta also said it won't mean fewer flights out of Comair's base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Besides Cincinnati, Comair also has hubs in Detroit and at New York's JFK and LaGuardia airports.

Comair was founded in 1977, flying three propeller-driven Piper Navajo aircraft. It started operating as Delta Connection in 1984 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta in 2000. Comair helped expand the regional jet business when it began flying Bombardier CRJ jets.

"As you can imagine, we're all very sad," said Lynn Dziad, spokeswoman for the Teamsters local that represents more than 400 flight attendants. She marked her 22nd anniversary with Comair just last week. "It's been a wonderful company. A lot of incredible people have worked here."

Kentucky's governor, Steve Beshear, said the Delta action is a blow to the region because of the job losses, and the Democrat called it "terribly disappointing." Kentucky will try to help affected workers, he said in a statement.

"Today's announcement is sad news for Cincinnati, as 300 southwest Ohio families will be looking for new opportunities as Comair ceases operations," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from the Cincinnati area, said in a statement. He said he has pressed Delta to offer opportunities for impacted workers. He added that Delta has committed to keeping up its Cincinnati area schedule, "which is important for Cincinnati's business community as they look for opportunities to grow and build their businesses across the nation and the world."

Aviation analyst Mike Boyd of The Boyd Group said he expected the Comair shutdown, because the regional airline business doesn't work anymore.

"It's not going to turn around," Boyd said. "Delta is quite correctly saying 'We've got to get rid of these uneconomic airlines.' "

Before entering bankruptcy protection in September 2005, Comair had more than 7,000 employees and 1,160 flights. Comair and Delta emerged from bankruptcy reorganization in April 2007.

Forty-nine people were killed when Comair Flight 5191 crashed on Aug. 27, 2006 in a field near Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky., after trying to take off from a runway that was too short for commercial jets. The National Transportation Safety Board found the pilots failed to notice they were on the wrong runway.

Delta had talked to prospective buyers for Comair, without success. It sold its other regional airlines ? Compass and Mesaba ? in 2010. Those carriers still operate flights for Delta, as do several other companies.

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. rose 3 cents to $9.44 in afternoon trading Friday.

Christians persecuted by Muslims | Reporting on the Middle East ...

    by Raymond Ibrahim
    Gatestone Institute
    July 26, 2012

    http://www.meforum.org/3292/muslim-persecution-of-christians-june-2012

    ?

U.S.-backed rebels are committing Christian genocide in Syria, where they are sacking churches and issuing threats that all Christians will be cleansed from rebel-held territory. A mass exodus of thousands of Christians is taking place, even as mainstream Western reporters like Robert Fisk demonize those same Christians for being supportive of the secular regime.

The bloody jihad waged against Nigeria?s Christians, which has seen hundreds killed this year alone, now includes plans to kill Christians with poisoned food, as part of the Islamic organization Boko Haram?s stated goal of purging Nigeria of all Christian presence.

During Egypt?s presidential elections, Al Ahram reported that "the Muslim Brotherhood blockaded entire streets, prevented Copts from voting at gunpoint, and threatened Christian families not to let their children go out and vote" for the secular candidate.

Meanwhile, under President Obama, the U.S. State Department, in an unprecedented move, purged the sections dealing with religious persecution from its recently released Country Reports on Human Rights. Likewise, the Obama administration insists that the Nigerian crisis has nothing to do with religion, even as Obama offered his hearty blessings to Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood president, in the midst of allegations of electoral fraud.

Categorized by theme, June?s assemblage of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes (but is not limited to) the following accounts, listed in alphabetical order by country, not severity.

    Church Attacks

Egypt: Because many visitors were in attendance, Muslims surrounded a Coptic church during Divine Liturgy "demanding that the visiting Copts leave the church before the completion of prayers, and threatening to burn down the church if their demand was not met." The priest contacted police asking for aid only to be told to comply with their demands, "and do not let buses with visitors to come to the church anymore." Christian worshippers exited halfway through liturgy to jeers outside. As they drove away, Muslims hurled stones at their buses. Also, repairs to a Coptic church that was torched and gutted a year ago by rioting Muslims were woefully inadequate, leaving the congregation with a staggering debt from further necessary repairs.

Indonesia: A Muslim mob of 300 wrecked a store that was being used for a Sunday church service on the pretext that it had not obtained "permission to hold Mass." The mob wrecked the first floor of the store, breaking windows and damaging furniture. Police stopped them before reaching the third floor, where some 60 Christians had congregated. None of the Muslims were arrested, although 12 Christians were taken into custody for questioning. Separately, in compliance to calls by Islamic clerics, authorities ordered 20 churches to be torn down, following the closure of 16 smaller Christian places of worship in the same district last month. The congregations continue to hold services inside their sealed-off buildings as other members stand guard outside.

Iran: Authorities ordered the closure of yet another church in the capital, Tehran, "amid a government campaign to crack down on the few recognized churches offering Farsi-speaking services," according to a human rights group. The church originally served Assyrian background Christian members; however, "due to an increasing number of Farsi-speaking believers?mostly MBBs [Muslim Background Believers]?it [the church] has become a cause of concern for the authorities and they now ordered it to shut down."

Kashmir: A 119-year-old church was torched by Muslims. The local bishop "said that the Muslim fundamentalists want Christians to leave the state? He said that the church had filed a case with the police but had been advised not to ?play up? such incidents." Christian minorities "are coming under growing threat from Kashmir?s Muslim majority. A Christian human rights group in India said that over 400 Christians have been displaced as a result."

Kazakhstan: Land use regulations are being exploited "as a means to prevent religious communities and their members exercising freedom of religion or belief." Most recently, authorities "forced a Methodist church to ?voluntarily? close and fined the wife of the Church?s Pastor, who further paid for an announcement in newspapers saying the church was ?liquidating itself,?" simply because "We do not want more punishment from the authorities."

Nigeria: Islamic militants attacked several churches during every Sunday of the month with bombs and guns killing dozens of Christian worshippers, and critically wounding hundreds, including many children. Growing numbers of Christians "dare not" attend church services anymore, even as reports suggest that some police are intentionally abandoning their watch prior to such attacks.

Sudan: Authorities bulldozed two church buildings to the ground and confiscated three Catholic schools, as a response to the secession of South Sudan in July 2011, saying that such buildings are associated with now unwelcome, largely Christian South Sudanese in the Islamic-ruled country. Another church building belonging to the Full Gospel Church was destroyed in the same area two months ago, also on the claim that it belonged to South Sudanese.

Turkmenistan: An Evangelical church in the Muslim-majority nation was raided by authorities: "All adult believers at the meeting were questioned about their faith and all of their Christian literature was confiscated." Their literature was returned two weeks later.

    Apostasy, Blasphemy, Proselytism

Egypt: A Christian student handing out Christian literature in Assuit University "raised the ire of Muslim students," resulting in clashes on campus, "amid shouts of sectarian chants," leading to many injuries. Likewise, a Salafi leader declared on Egyptian TV that Muslims have no right "to convert to Christianity."

Iran: Five months after five Christian converts were arrested, their condition and fate remain unknown. They are accused of "attending house church services, promoting Christianity, propagating against the regime and disturbing national security." Being imprisoned for 130 days without word "is an obvious example of physical and mental abuse of the detainees?. one of the prison guards openly told one of these Christian detainees that all these pressures and uncertainties are intended to make them flee the country after they are released." Also, a young Iranian woman, who recently converted to Christianity and was an outspoken activist against the Islamic regime, was found dead, slumped over her car?s steering wheel, with a single gunshot wound to her head.

Pakistan: A banned Islamic group filed a blasphemy case against a 25-year-old mentally retarded Christian man. Muslims had converted him to Islam two years earlier, to use him as a pretext to annex his Christian village. In the words of a witness: "These people (Muslims) do not let us live. We are poor but are working hard to survive. On the night of the incidence a mob of Muslim clerics gathered [around] our colony to burn us all because of the blasphemy Ramzan [the retarded man] committed. Everyone was very scared. We all have small children in our houses and we didn?t know what to do. The mob surrounded our colony and raised a slogan to burn all the houses, they had torches in their hands and petrol in the cans. We called police and thank God police arrived just in time.

Saudi Arabia: Thirty-five Ethiopian Christians arrested in December for praying in a private home remain jailed, even as Saudi officials offer contradicting reasons for their arrest. Meanwhile, they have been beaten and subjected to interrogations and strip searches. Saudi Arabia formally bans all religions other than Islam. However, in 2006, Saudi authorities told the United States that they would "guarantee and protect the right to private worship for all, including non-Muslims who gather in homes for religious practice."

Sudan: A Muslim woman divorced her husband, a convert to Christianity, causing the court automatically to grant her custody of their two sons. When the father tried to visit his children, his wife threatened to notify authorities. "They might take the case to a prosecution court, which might lead to my sentencing to death according to Islamic apostasy law?but I am ready for this," said the Christian. "I want the world to know this. What crime have I done? Is it because I became a Christian? I know if the world is watching, they [Sudanese authorities] will be afraid to do any harm to me."

United States: Two Christian men in Saint Louis, Missouri received death threats from Iran?s Islamic Revolutionary Guard, apparently for converting to Christianity and preaching it. One of the men formerly served in the Revolutionary Guard and was once even assigned a suicide mission against Israel, before converting and immigrating to the U.S. "The two men believe that Islam is a religion that could easily radicalize a Muslim into a terrorist." Likewise, in Dearborn Michigan, Christian demonstrators exercising their free speech rights were stoned by Muslims shouting "Allahu Akbar!"

    Dhimmitude

[General Abuse, Debasement, and Suppression of Non-Muslims as "Tolerated" Citizens]

Indonesia: "The number of violations of Christians? religious rights in Indonesia reached 40 in the first five months of the year, nearly two-thirds the amount of anti-Christian actions in all of last year," according to the Jakarta Christian Communication Forum. The Christian minority in Indonesia faced 64 cases of violations of religious freedom last year, up from 47 in 2010." Violence against Christians also increased.

Mali: "Islamists in control of northern Mali are enforcing a strict version of Sharia law that victimizes Christians, women and other vulnerable groups." The radicals took control of northern Mali in April after ousting the armed forces of the government. "All the Christians have left Timbuktu (the main city in north Mali) because of the Sharia law as well as because of the presence of people linked with al-Qaeda," said a Christian leader who fled from northern Mali.

Pakistan: Police are siding with the Muslims accused of beating a pregnant Christian woman, causing her to miscarriage twins, and gang-raping her 13-year-old Christian niece. "Muslim criminals believe police and courts will give little credence to the complaints of Christians in the country, which is nearly 96 percent Muslim," adds the report. The Christian family is "paying a huge price for being poor ? and for being Christian," said the uncle: "What can we expect from the police when they are not paying heed even to the court orders? They are distorting facts and have even gone to the extent of accusing a 13-year-old [raped girl] of committing adultery with three men." Another Christian politician?s ID mistook him for a Muslim, causing him to insist "on the floor of the Punjab Assembly that he was born a Christian and appealed to them and the media not to indulge in propaganda against him that could incite Muslim extremists to kill him."

South Africa: More than 70 students were kicked out of the Coastal KZN As-Salaam campus dormitories and are currently homeless, because campus officials tried to make them observe Islam, including by banning Bibles, which the students resisted. "All we wanted was to be free to practice our own religions and not be forced to follow Islam, but now we have been punished by being deprived of safe accommodation," said one student.

Turkey: Thousands of devout Muslims prayed outside Hagia Sophia?formerly Christendom?s greatest cathedral now a museum?shouting, "Allahu Akbar!" and demanding the building be opened as a mosque in honor of the jihadi sultan who conquered Constantinople in the 15th century.

    About this Series

Because the persecution of Christians in the Islamic world is on its way to reaching epidemic proportions, "Muslim Persecution of Christians" was developed to collate some?by no means all?of the instances of persecution that surface each month. It serves two purposes:

    1. Intrinsically, to document that which the mainstream media does not: the habitual, if not chronic, Muslim persecution of Christians.
    2. Instrumentally, to show that such persecution is not "random," but systematic and interrelated?that it is rooted in a worldview inspired by Sharia.

Accordingly, whatever the anecdote of persecution, it typically fits under a specific theme, including hatred for churches and other Christian symbols; apostasy and blasphemy laws; sexual abuse of Christian women; forced conversions to Islam; theft and plunder in lieu of jizya (tribute); overall expectations for Christians to behave like cowed "dhimmis" (barely tolerated citizens); and simple violence and murder. Oftentimes it is a combination thereof.

Because these accounts of persecution span different ethnicities, languages, and locales?from Morocco in the west, to India in the east, and throughout the West, wherever there are Muslims?it should be clear that one thing alone binds them: Islam?whether the strict application of Islamic Sharia law, or the supremacist culture born of it.

Gaza Christians fear for future of tiny community

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Christians in overwhelmingly Muslim Gaza have long fretted in private about the survival of their tiny community.

But their fears exploded publicly when two members of the flock recently converted to Islam. Christians staged a rare public protest, accusing Muslims of pulling followers from their faith.

The converts, who had been hiding to evade angry relatives, eventually surfaced and said they voluntarily changed religions. Gaza's ruling Islamic militant Hamas movement reiterated respect for freedom of worship and Christian institutions.

But the uproar highlighted the growing sense of vulnerability among Christians here. They are a dwindling minority among a mostly devout Muslim majority, mostly hemmed into the tiny sliver of land because of movement restrictions imposed by Israel and Egypt. And they say some Muslims are doubling their efforts to convert them, emboldened by the atmosphere of Islamic fervor fostered by Hamas since it seized power in Gaza in 2007.

"We aren't safe anymore," said Josef Elias, a 44-year-old Christian from Gaza City. "This is a conspiracy against our existence in the Holy Land."

Fewer than 3,000 Christians live among Gaza's 1.7 million Muslim residents, and their numbers have rapidly shrunk in recent years, mainly because of the territory's turmoil. Some Christian families fled during the destruction from Israel's three-week military campaign against Hamas militants in the winter of 2008-2009. Others emigrated as Gaza's economy crumbled under Israel and Egypt's blockade, imposed after Hamas' takeover. Low birth rates also erode the community.

Those who remain say they feel increasingly unwelcome amid the more assertive religiosity everywhere around them.

With the latest conversions, only 10 Christians are known to have turned to Islam in the past eight years, according to community members. But some Christians say that while there is no officially sanctioned push to turn them to Islam, individual Muslims have become pushier in trying.

The informal social pressure can range from strangers on the street urging them to embrace Islam to colleagues at work or university persistently discussing their Muslim faith with Christian colleagues. Particularly vulnerable to the advances are youth wanting to join Gaza's wider society and gain greater opportunities for marriage and jobs ? as well as unhappily married Christians, since conversion to Islam is one of the few ways to get a divorce from their Church marriages.

The community's tiny size makes it difficult to maintain independent institutions that preserve their identity. The community offers private schools for the younger children, but most Christian youths attend public high schools and later vie to get into Islamic University, considered the best in Gaza. In those environments, Christian youths mix with deeply devout Muslim students and teachers ? and parents worry about their influence rubbing off onto their children.

In Palestinian society, Muslims and Christians tend to emphasize that relations between the two communities are harmonious, and that they are bound by a shared attempt to shake off Israeli occupation of lands they want for a future state.

"The (Christian) community is part of our people," said Hamas government minister Bassem Naim when asked about the fears of Gaza's Christians. "They have the full right to practice their faith."

At the same time, clear lines are drawn between Muslims and Christians. As in most parts of the Middle East, religion in the Palestinian territories is a badge of membership rather than a matter of personal choice. Those leaving the fold face expulsion from their families and communities.

Overall, some 160,000 Christians live in the Holy Land, including 110,000 in Israel and the rest in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, said Bernard Sabella, a Palestinian researcher.

The Gaza government said 2,980 Christians are registered in the territory, mostly Greek Orthodox. Christians said they believed the figure is closer to 1,500.

In recent years, several Christian institutions were attacked by suspected Muslim hardliners. In at least two cases, including the torching of the local YMCA, assailants were caught and sentenced to prison.

The most recent conversions touched a nerve in particular because the two ? 24-year-old Ramez al-Amash and 32-year-old Hiba Abu Dawoud ? came from prominent families. The two, who converted separately, disappeared from sight. Abu Dawoud took her three young daughters with her. Rumors swirled until a Muslim cleric announced last week they were under his protection.

Reaction was fierce. Community members led by Gaza's Greek Orthodox Archbishop Alexious blared that the two had been forced to convert.

"They kidnapped them ... they use even drugs," the archbishop told dozens of agitated Christian protesters gathered last week in the centuries-old Greek Orthodox Church of St. Perfidious in Gaza City. The demonstrators alternately chanted against Hamas, demanded the government bring back the converts, and shouted that their community was in peril.

But the converts later told Hamas-linked TV stations that they freely adopted Islam after months of deliberations. Al-Amash said he had long questioned his faith and learned about Islam through the Internet and Muslim friends. He said he had asked his family to understand.

"I told them I am good, and it wasn't against my will. Be my friends and my family," he said.

Abu Dawoud, wearing a blue Muslim headscarf and a long loose black robe, said, "Nobody forced me. Through my studies in the college and university, I came to love the religion ... I am very happy with this decision." Her girls, ages 12, 9 and 7, were shown on a pro-Hamas TV station cheerfully singing along to Islamic children's songs.

Abu Dawood said she had learned about Islam at an Islamic college in Gaza where she was studying the arts. At the church protest, her now estranged husband, Khaled Hilal, said that when she first started her studies she had complained that her schoolmates constantly hounded her about Islam and why she should convert.

Hassan al-Juju, head of the Islamic court that oversees conversions, said a panel of six judges repeatedly questioned the new converts, "Are you sure? Are you doing this freely?"

The families are trying to recover from the trauma surrounding the conversions.

Abu Dawoud has met with Hilal ? they are now technically divorced ? and will be discussing visitation rights, said Iyad al-Alami, deputy director of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, which is mediating between the families and converts.

Al-Amash wants to live with his family again, but wants his mother to declare that she respects his decision. He still fears he'll be attacked by Christians angry at his decision, said al-Alami.

Among some in the community, the conversions struck a chord of panic.

"We lived together for years in Gaza: The sound of church bells ringing used to mix with the call of prayer from the mosque," said Elias, a government worker. But now, fearing for his children, Elias said he was looking for a way out.

"I am thinking of leaving with my family," he said.
