South African police drag man by van, he's later found dead

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? They bound his hands to the rear of a van, and then sped off, dragging the slender taxi driver along the pavement as a crowd of onlookers shouted in dismay. The man was later found dead.

A gut-wrenching video of the scene is all the more disturbing because the men who abused the Mozambican immigrant were uniformed South African police officers and the van was a marked police vehicle.

The graphic scenes of the victim struggling for his life shocked a nation long accustomed to reports of police violence.

The Daily Sun, a South African newspaper, posted video the footage Thursday and it was quickly picked up by other South African news outlets and carried on the Internet. It sparked immediate outrage.

"They are there for safety, but we as a people fear them more," said Johannesburg resident Alfonso Adams. "You don't know who to trust anymore."

Some of those in the crowd who watched the scene unfold in the Daveyton township east of Johannesburg shouted at the police and warned that it was being videotaped. The police did not seem at all concerned by all the witnesses and the presence of cameras as they tied Mido Macia, a 27-year-old from neighboring Mozambique, to the back of a police vehicle, his hands behind his head. At least three policemen participated in the incident. Macia was found dead in a Daveyton police cell late Tuesday.

"We are going to film this," several onlookers shouted in Zulu as the police tormented Macia. One bystander can be heard on the videotape shouting in Zulu: "What has this guy done?"

A murder probe is underway on the evidence that Macia suffered head and upper abdomen injuries, including internal bleeding, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the police watchdog agency, said Thursday. The injuries could be from the dragging and he could also have been beaten later in police custody.

"The allegations are that he was dragged behind a vehicle and his head was bent on the police vehicle. There are also allegations of assault," said the investigative unit's spokesman Moses Dlamini.

The video evidence of the abuse renewed concerns about brutality, corruption and other misconduct by a national police force whose reputation has suffered in recent years amid reports that many officers lack training. Some have been charged with committing the crimes they are supposed to prevent, including rape and murder.

"As horrific as it is, it is not exceptional. Hardly a week goes by without such stories of brutality," said Jacob van Garderen, national director of Lawyers for Human Rights.

At first, Macia, dressed in jeans and a red T-shirt, is dragged along the road by the vehicle at slow speed, the footage shows. He awkwardly tries to keep step even though he is almost horizontal above the ground. Then the van stops, two policemen pick up the legs of the taxi driver and drop them to the ground as the van picks up speed and drives off, beyond the view of the camera.

The police watchdog agency said the incident started just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday when the cab driver was allegedly obstructing traffic with his vehicle. Then Macia allegedly assaulted a constable and took his weapon before he was overpowered, the police investigative unit said.

Macia was found dead in a cell over two hours later by another policeman, according to the watchdog agency.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega "strongly condemned" what happened. South Africans are "urged to remain vigilant and continue to report all acts of crime irrespective of who is involved," said Phiyega in a statement.

Phiyega has tried to upgrade the reputation of the South African police since her appointment last year. Last month, Phiyega told a group of police officials the standing of the force "has been severely but not irreparably tarnished over the past several years."

The problems, though, are immense for a police force that has expanded from some 120,000 to almost 200,000 over the last decade, "often failing to match the increase in quantity with sufficient quality," said Johan Burger, who served for 36 years on the force before becoming a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies.

Several experts contacted by The Associated Press also said that in recent years there has been an increasing willingness to use a shoot-to-kill approach to the crime and violence.

An average of 860 people a year died in police custody or as a result of police action between 2009 and 2010, up from 695 a year from 2003 to 2008, according to Burger of the security studies institute.

Further staining the reputation of the police is the Marikana shootings when, on Aug. 16, 2012, a line of South African police opened fire on a crowd of striking miners, killing 34 at a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. A judicial commission is investigating allegations that many were killed in a rocky hill, near the much-filmed initial scene of the attack, shot in the back as they tried to escape.

Windows Server Brings Manageability and Productivity to Businesses

For small and mid-sized businesses, the expanded capabilities of Windows Server 2012 provide significant benefits that far outweigh the investment, keeping the focus on growth.

Nick_Parker

By Nick Parker, CVP WW OEM Division

If you?re assessing whether to switch to a Windows Server system or upgrade from an older version, chances are you just want your IT to do more, and do it more efficiently.

Just last week we hosted 30 entrepreneurs on the Microsoft campus at the Dell Small Business Think Tank. In the session on technology they shared their goals for further embracing new devices in the workplace, increasing collaboration and improving security for the cloud. Small businesses want to grow their businesses. They don?t wake up in the morning and think ?I need a server? yet it is a server that would ultimately help them with these business challenges and allow them to focus on driving results, not managing IT.

The good news is we?ve been working on the Windows Server family for the past decade and continue to add capabilities that businesses tell us they need. Today the benefits of upgrading to Windows Server 2012 can far outweigh the investment. Here are some of the most impactful ways it will help the technology and the business run smoothly:

In the OEM Division, we work with hardware partners to bring Windows devices to market, including a range of Windows Servers and solutions for business customers. Several of our top OEM partners have server and systems packages that allow a business to upgrade from the point of customer contact all the way through to the back office and some will even manage it for you:

  • HP offers quite a menu of products and services that can be combined into packages, including outsourced IT support and a comprehensive bring-your-own-device networking package so employees can securely use their own smart phones, tablets and more to do their work.
  • Dell has an array of powerful servers and services, from small rack systems all the way to the cloud. The company also offers management software and services to help automate essential tasks like deploying, updating, monitoring and maintaining systems.
  • IBM can bring the entire spectrum of processing, storage and networking technologies at whatever scale your business requires.
  • Fujitsu produces some of the most cutting-edge servers out there today, including their Primergy line, which offers a range of flexible hardware and services to suit almost any business.

In addition, Microsoft has a network of thousands of partners worldwide who can help almost any business transform their infrastructure with state of the art hardware and implementation services.

The upshot is this: for any small or mid-size business looking to increase its competitiveness, making the move to Windows Server 2012 can increase employee productivity, reduce the time and costs associated with IT management and help keep critical data safe.

Pope in final address: I'm not abandoning the church

Some 50,000 were invited and thousands more came to Pope Benedict XVI's final audience. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

Pope Benedict XVI assured a huge, cheering crowd at the Vatican Wednesday that he was not abandoning the Catholic Church, saying he would remain at its service through prayer.

"I ask each of you to pray for me," he told tens of thousands who gathered in the sunshine to watch his?final general audience before Thursday's abdication.

Greg Burke, a spokesman for the Vatican who was with Pope Benedict XVI just hours ago, talks about the pope's final audience and his upcoming abdication.

Referring to the many turbulent moments of his papacy, he acknowledge its moments of joy but also difficulty when "It seemed like the Lord was sleeping."

"There were moments when the waters were choppy and there were headwinds," he said.

He said he was not "coming down from the cross" despite renouncing his office, saying his decision was taken "in full awareness of its gravity and rarity but also with profound serenity of spirit."

Earlier, pilgrims and onlookers from around the world cheered as Benedict arrived and made a circuit of the square on his "popemobile."

Benedict waved as he swept through the crowd, pausing briefly several times to bless babies, before heading to a platform in front of St. Peter?s Basilica to make his address.

Among the audience was New Yorker Elise O'Donnell-Tixon, who is now living in Rome. "I'm sad because this will likely be the last time I see him," she said. "I was lucky, because my husband and I were blessed by the pope at an audience last Christmas. We got front-row seats."

At the end of the speech, the crowd stood to applaud.

Vatican communications adviser Greg Burke told TODAY that Pope Benedict had appeared to be calm during the speech, despite the emotion of the occasion.

"He has always been very serene," Burke said. "Above all else, he showed he has faith. His message was that it's not our church, it's not my church, it's the church of Christ."

Vatican organizers said?more than 50,000 had applied for official tickets for Wednesday?s event ? eight times the usual number of applications. An estimated total of 200,000 were expected in square and surrounding streets.

Pope Benedict XVI delivered a short English-language reprise of his final audience in English at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.

The size of the event means there was not expected to be any kissing of the pontiff?s hand as is traditional after papal audiences.

Young members of the Catholic group Opus Dei served as stewards at the entrance to the square, managing the queues of people filing in past metal detectors, AFP correspondent Gildas Le Roux reported.

Not all of them supported Benedict's resignation, Le Roux said, quoting one of the stewards, Leonardo Rossi, as saying: "I do not share the pope's decision to step down. It is not a fitting time, with all the problems the church is going through."

Many in the crowd waved flags and banners wishing the pope well, although the overall tone of the event remained sombre.

Sister Carmela, who lives north of Rome, traveled to the square with her fellow nuns and members of her parish, Reuters said.

"He did what he had to do in his conscience before God," she told Reuters. "This is a day in which we are called to trust in the Lord, a day of hope. There is no room for sadness here today. We have to pray, there are many problems in the Church but we have to trust in the Lord."

Tens of thousands had been in the square since early Wednesday in the hope of securing a good place from which to see the audience.

Among them was a marching band from Pope Benedict?s native Germany. Balthasar Bauer, 23, from Bavaria, who was in traditional dress, lederhosen, said: "This will likely be the last Bavarian pope, so I had to come here to see him for one last time."

After the address, the Pope's Twitter account, @Pontifex, posted a message that said: "If only everyone could experience the joy of being Christian, being loved by God who gave his Son for us!"

Pope Benedict's full 17-minute sermon in Italian, with English translation.

Pope Benedict will leave his residence inside the Vatican and travel by helicopter to his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, about 15 miles south-east of Rome at about 4.55 p.m. local time (10:55 a.m. ET) Thursday. His papacy will officially end at 8 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET).

After stepping down, the pope will keep his name, His Holiness Benedict XVI, but get a new official title, "Emeritus Pope." The Vatican on Tuesday said he would wear a simple white cassock and swap his traditional red shoes for a pair of brown leather loafers he was given on his trip to Leon in Mexico last year.

Meanwhile, the Vatican said Wednesday that the date of the conclave to elect Benedict's successor may not be known until after Monday.

Father Federico Lombardi told the Catholic News Service that cardinals eligible to take part cannot set a start date for the conclave until they have met at the Vatican, and that invitations for them to meet will not be sent out by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, until Friday.

NBC News' Carlo Angerer and Andy Eckardt and Reuters contributed to this report.

Clever battery completes stretchable electronics package: Can stretch, twist and bend -- and return to normal shape

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Northwestern University's Yonggang Huang and the University of Illinois' John A. Rogers are the first to demonstrate a stretchable lithium-ion battery -- a flexible device capable of powering their innovative stretchable electronics.

No longer needing to be connected by a cord to an electrical outlet, the stretchable electronic devices now could be used anywhere, including inside the human body. The implantable electronics could monitor anything from brain waves to heart activity, succeeding where flat, rigid batteries would fail.

Huang and Rogers have demonstrated a battery that continues to work -- powering a commercial light-emitting diode (LED) -- even when stretched, folded, twisted and mounted on a human elbow. The battery can work for eight to nine hours before it needs recharging, which can be done wirelessly.

The new battery enables true integration of electronics and power into a small, stretchable package. Details will be published Feb. 26 by the online journal Nature Communications.

"We start with a lot of battery components side by side in a very small space, and we connect them with tightly packed, long wavy lines," said Huang, a corresponding author of the paper. "These wires provide the flexibility. When we stretch the battery, the wavy interconnecting lines unfurl, much like yarn unspooling. And we can stretch the device a great deal and still have a working battery."

Huang led the portion of the research focused on theory, design and modeling. He is the Joseph Cummings Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The power and voltage of the stretchable battery are similar to a conventional lithium-ion battery of the same size, but the flexible battery can stretch up to 300 percent of its original size and still function.

Rogers, also a corresponding author of the paper, led the group that worked on the experimental and fabrication work of the stretchable battery. He is the Swanlund Chair at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Huang and Rogers have been working together for the last six years on stretchable electronics, and designing a cordless power supply has been a major challenge. Now they have solved the problem with their clever "space filling technique," which delivers a small, high-powered battery.

For their stretchable electronic circuits, the two developed "pop-up" technology that allows circuits to bend, stretch and twist. They created an array of tiny circuit elements connected by metal wire "pop-up bridges." When the array is stretched, the wires -- not the rigid circuits -- pop up.

This approach works for circuits but not for a stretchable battery. A lot of space is needed in between components for the "pop-up" interconnect to work. Circuits can be spaced out enough in an array, but battery components must be packed tightly to produce a powerful but small battery. There is not enough space between battery components for the "pop-up" technology to work.

Huang's design solution is to use metal wire interconnects that are long, wavy lines, filling the small space between battery components. (The power travels through the interconnects.)

The unique mechanism is a "spring within a spring": The line connecting the components is a large "S" shape and within that "S" are many smaller "S's." When the battery is stretched, the large "S" first stretches out and disappears, leaving a line of small squiggles. The stretching continues, with the small squiggles disappearing as the interconnect between electrodes becomes taut.

"We call this ordered unraveling," Huang said. "And this is how we can produce a battery that stretches up to 300 percent of its original size."

The stretching process is reversible, and the battery can be recharged wirelessly. The battery's design allows for the integration of stretchable, inductive coils to enable charging through an external source but without the need for a physical connection.

Huang, Rogers and their teams found the battery capable of 20 cycles of recharging with little loss in capacity. The system they report in the paper consists of a square array of 100 electrode disks, electrically connected in parallel.

Prenatal DHA reduces early preterm birth and low birth weight

Feb. 25, 2013 ? University of Kansas researchers have found that the infants of mothers who were given 600 milligrams of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA during pregnancy weighed more at birth and were less likely to be very low birth weight and born before 34 weeks gestation than infants of mothers who were given a placebo. This result greatly strengthens the case for using the dietary supplement during pregnancy.

The results are from the first five years of a 10-year, double-blind randomized controlled trial to be published in the April issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and online Feb. 20. A follow-up of this sample of infants is ongoing to determine whether prenatal DHA nutritional supplementation will benefit children's intelligence and school readiness.

"A reduction in early preterm and very low birth weight delivery could have clear clinical and public health significance," said Susan Carlson, A.J. Rice Professor of Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who directed the study with John Colombo, University of Kansas professor of psychology and director of the Life Span Institute.

"We believe that supplementing U.S. women with DHA could safely increase mean birth weight and gestational age to numbers that are closer to other developed countries such as Norway and Australia," she said.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) occurs naturally in cell membranes with the highest levels in brain cells, but levels can be increased by diet or supplements. An infant obtains DHA from his or her mother in utero and postnatally from human milk, but the amount received depends upon the mother's DHA status.

"U.S. women typically consume less DHA than women in most of the developed world," said Carlson.

During the first five years of the study, children of women enrolled in the study received multiple developmental assessments at regular intervals throughout infancy and at 18 months of age. In the next phase of the study, the children will receive twice-yearly assessments until they are six years of age. The researchers will measure developmental milestones that occur in later childhood and are linked to lifelong health and welfare.

Previous research has established the effects of postnatal feeding of DHA on infant cognitive and intellectual development, but DHA is accumulated most rapidly in the fetal brain during pregnancy, said Colombo. "That's why we are so interested in the effects of DHA taken prenatally, because we will really be able to see how this nutrient affects development over the long term."

The study is funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

This press release is available in Spanish.

This research has culminated with the recent publication of "La televisin durante la Transicin espaola" (Ctedra, 2012) ("Television during the Spanish Transition), a book by Manuel Palacio, a tenured professor of Audiovisual Communication at UC3M. This volume aims to interrelate the television medium with the Spanish transition to democracy; in it, the author asks about the role played by TVE in the political and cultural process that took place during that period, which runs from the change from the dictatorial regime under Franco to one of public freedom, from 1974 to approximately 1981.

Long before that time, on the 28th of October 1956, television began to be regularly seen in Spain. Its first nearly twenty years of existence were marked by censorship under the Franco regime, and few people could imagine that, in the 70s, it would become one of the key agents of change in Spanish society and even one of the elements that filled the public's collective imagination with the new values of freedom. This is what is depicted by Professor Manuel Palacio, who explains in his work that television collaborates in the processes that shape public opinion, in mechanisms of socialization, and in the order of the symbolic universe of each community. "In order for democracy to be consolidated, it was essential that the Spanish people become socialized in new values. This is where television programs played a role," he notes.

Thus, this study attempts to resolve a paradox: given that during the Transition this medium always served the interests of those that held political power, how is it possible that at the same time, broadcasts that sometimes collided head-on with the ideological assumptions held by the management itself often slipped through the cracks and into the programming? TVE's management tried to create news broadcasts and a line of programming that were in line with the Government's interests, explains Palacio. In addition, there were many hours in the schedule to fill and there were many workers (some 6000) spread throughout the country, who were trying to somehow reflect their way of thinking, whether that was in favor of continuing with the Regime, reforming the Regime or breaking with the Regime. "One of the paradoxes that was the most difficult for the maximalists to accept was born of the dialectic between the management and the workers: in Spanish Television, during the Transition, there were programs that reflected all of the ideologies," concludes Manuel Palacio. "And from this situation comes an inevitable corollary: television does not have to be completely democratic in its structures in order to produce programs that are democratic."

Historical overview of television

This work begins with a historical vision, going over what television was like during the Arias Navarro government (1974-76). Those were years in which "its programs established a public programming (national) and even used the same processes of common identity as in the town squares: flags, hymns and local festivals," although television also began to reflect the erosion of Francoism's values. This is due to the fact that, at that time, this medium was already considered the best way to reach the public. In fact, in his first appearance, Carlos Arias Navarro said: "My presence tonight in your homes is in response to the need that every leader feels to communicate directly with his country." As logic dictates, the author dedicates a large part of this work to the government of Adolfo Surez, during which creative freedom, as well as the regulation of politics and television appeared. In the book, there are memories of the first nude scenes on television, the position that women gradually gained as professionals of the medium, the role of important characters such as Chicho Ibez Serrador with "Un, dos, tres" ("One, Two, Three a humor and game show) and his "Historias para no dormir" ("Stories to Stay Awake By a program of thrillers), and Antonio Mercero's productions. The book also describes how Franco's death was experienced on Paseo de la Habana (location of TVE at that time), what the first images of the Royal Family were like, and what the first steps in live programming were.

This work was made possible by funding for the R+D+i research project "Los medios audiovisuales en la Transicin espaola (1975-1985): las imgenes del cambio democrtico" (Audiovisual media in the Spanish Transition 1975-1985: the images of democratic change), awarded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacin de Espaa (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation), whose main researcher is Manuel Palacio, head of UC3M's TECMERIN research group (Televisin-Cine: memoria, representacin e industria Television Film: memory, performance and industry ). Nearly twenty researchers from UC3M and other institutions, such as the Universidad Autnoma of Madrid, New York University, the Universitat Ramn Llull, the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and the Universidad de Sevilla have taken part in this project, whose objectives include emphasizing the strategies of the audiovisual construction of the Transition as an important part of history that should be remembered.

Supreme Court justices reprimand Texas prosecutor

Playing off his?pre-Oscars prediction?that everyone would hate him at the Oscars, Seth MacFarlane spent the first 19 minutes of the Academy Awards on Sunday making sure everyone would, in fact, hate him.?After some real stinkers, the main conceit was William Shatner descending on a screen as Captain Kirk, from the future, to tell MacFarlane to do a better job of hosting, in a kind of alternate-reality bit that turned pretty sordid?and pretty fast. ...

New research highlights a memory strategy that may help people who suffer from depression in recalling positive day-to-day experiences. The study is published in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Previous research has shown that being able to call up concrete, detailed memories that are positive or self-affirming can help to boost positive mood for people with a history of depression. But it's this kind of vivid memory for everyday events that seems to be dampened for people who suffer from depression.

Researcher Tim Dalgleish of the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit and colleagues hypothesized that a well-known method used to enhance memory known as the "method-of-loci" strategy might help depressed patients to recall positive memories with greater ease.

The method-of-loci strategy consists of associating vivid memories with physical objects or locations buildings you see on your commute to work every day, for instance. To recall the memories, all you have to do is imagine going through your commute.

In the study, depressed patients were asked to come up with 15 positive memories. One group was asked to use the method-of-loci strategy to create associations with their memories, while a control group was asked to use a simple "rehearsal" strategy, grouping memories based on their similarities.

After practicing their techniques, the participants were asked to recall as many of their 15 positive memories as they could.

The two methods were equally effective on the initial memory test conducted in the lab both groups were able to recall nearly all of the 15 memories.

But the strategies were not equally effective over time.

After a week's worth of practice at home, the participants received a surprise phone call from the researchers, who asked them to recall the memories one more time.

Participants who used the method-of-loci technique were significantly better at recalling their positive memories when compared to those who used the rehearsal technique.

These data suggest that using the method-of-loci technique to associate vivid, positive memories with physical objects or locations may make it easier for depressed individuals to recall those positive memories, which may help to elevate their mood in the long-term.

Catholic activists petition LA cardinal not to join papal conclave

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Roman Catholic activists on Saturday petitioned a U.S. cardinal to recuse himself from taking part in selecting a new pope so as not to insult survivors of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was archbishop of Los Angeles.

The activists delivered a petition with nearly 10,000 signatures to the North Hollywood church where Cardinal Roger Mahony resides.

"It's a total slap in the face to victims to think (Mahony) can cover up 25 years of child sex abuse and then go prancing off to Rome like a prince of the Church," said Joelle Casteix, western regional director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

As archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 until 2011, Mahony worked to send priests known to be abusers out of state to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s, according to church files unsealed under a U.S. court order last month.

Although his successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez, removed him from all public and administrative duties, Mahony has announced his intention to be among 117 cardinals allowed into the Vatican's Sistine Chapel to vote for the next leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Last week, Pope Benedict XVI, 85, announced his resignation effective February 28, making him the first pope in centuries to abdicate rather than die in office.

His eight-year reign will be remembered by many for the child sex abuse scandal in Europe and the United States - most of which took place in the 1980s but which came to light more recently.

In California, at a news conference outside the St. Charles Borromeo Church, where Mahony is in residence, members of the groups held up signs reading, "Respect the victims. Honor the church. Hold leaders accountable."

"This should be a time for new beginnings," said Chris Pumpelly, a spokesman for social justice nonprofit Catholics United, before delivering the petitions to the church. If Mahony were to vote, "it would be a step backward. It would be a validation of the old ways."

It was unclear whether Mahony was at the church at the time, or if he would receive the documents before he left for Rome.

Earlier on Saturday, Mahony was deposed for more than three hours about his handling of sex-abuse cases. It was the first time he was asked about the church files unsealed last month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Influential Italian magazine Famiglia Cristiana, or "Christian Family," has also questioned whether Mahony should be part of the conclave. Many readers responded online that he should not.

On Friday, Mahony took to Twitter to repeat his intent on voting: "Just a few short hours before my departure for Rome. Will be tweeting often from Rome, except during the actual Conclave itself. Prayers!"

College Basketball Odds: Georgetown Hoyas at Syracuse Orange

http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/002/996/873/hi-res-141131878_crop_650x440.jpg?1361552920

Two of the three teams tied atop the Big East Conference collide today as the No. 11 Georgetown Hoyas take on the No. 8 Syracuse Orange. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on CBS. Currently the odds for the game have Syracuse as a home favorite.

For what it's worth, this is probably the final time Georgetown and Syracuse will play in the Carrier Dome. Many consider this to be the end of an era as the Big East is for sure breaking up in the very near future. Yet, before it ends there's still a lot to be determined. Marquette is tied with both Syracuse and Georgetown at 10-3 for the top spot in the Big East. Not many thought the Hoyas would be in this position this late in the season, but John Thompson III's gang will look for a huge road win today.

Syracuse is in the midst of a very tough five-game stretch, which begins and ends with Georgetown. They'll also take on Marquette, Louisville and DePaul. Jim Boeheim's team is averaging 75 points a game and plays very well at home, winning all 16 of their games at the Carrier Dome to this point in the season. They aren't the best shooting team in the country at 45 percent, but they do rebound well.

They've been a great team with James Southerland back as well. He can stretch defenses and allow for a more wide-open offense for Syracuse, which they certainly like to do with Michael Carter-Williams calling the shots. Brandon Triche has also played well and has no problems knocking down big shots for Syracuse. All three will have to play well for the Orange to hold off Georgetown.

There's no doubt this will be a physical, more than likely low-scoring game. Otto Porter Jr. leads the Hoyas at better than 15 and 7 rebounds per game. He's arguably the best overall player in the Big East and has no problems leading the Hoyas. Markel Starks is an excellent point guard for Georgetown, who will want to attack the Syracuse zone defense. Look, the Hoyas have no problem playing a game where they have to milk the shot clock and look for the best available opportunity to score points. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 33 points in the team's last game off the bench.

Georgetown scores 10 points a game less than Syracuse does, and they're not nearly as good a rebounding team as Syracuse is. They do take better advantage of scoring, shooting better than 46 percent from the floor.

The Hoyas have gone 4-2 on the road this season but their best win away from home was over Notre Dame back in January.

In what is projected to be the final game between rivals in the Carrier Dome, look for a slugfest in this one. Do not surprised if this game is played in the 50s or 60s as both teams play tough defense. Because this is going to probably be low-scoring, we're going to scoop up the points with Georgetown.

Free Pick: Syracuse 62, Georgetown 58

Egypt opposition leader calls for election boycott

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei called Saturday for a boycott of parliamentary elections, drawing immediate criticism from some within his movement who said it was a hasty decision.

The dispute showed the fragility of a fairly new opposition front forged after the deeply fragmented movement found little success at the polls since it led the 2011 uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Opposition infighting would only help ensure that the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group remains Egypt's dominant political force after the next vote.

"(I) called for parliamentary election boycott in 2010 to expose sham democracy. Today I repeat my call, will not be part of an act of deception," Nobel laureate ElBaradei, who leads the opposition National Salvation Front (NSF), wrote on his Twitter account.

The comment reiterated a frequently heard opposition sentiment that democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi is acting like Mubarak.

Elections under Mubarak's three-decade rule were widely rigged and parliament was dominated by members of his ruling party.

Morsi called for the elections in a decree late Thursday night ? a four-stage vote starting at the end of April and concluding in June.

On Friday, ElBaradei said holding elections during this time of deep political polarization "is a recipe for disaster."

Morsi's Brotherhood accused the opposition of running away from the challenge.

The deputy head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Essam el-Erian, responded to ElBaradei's call on his Facebook page.

"Running away from a popular test only means that some want to assume executive authority without a democratic mandate," he said of the opposition. "We've never yet known them to face any election or serious test."

The mutual recriminations reflected a new escalation in political tensions that could spill into even wider strikes and protests ahead of the elections.

The opposition has accused Morsi and his Brotherhood backers of using election wins to monopolize power in tactics similar to the former regime.

They accuse Morsi of reneging on a promise to form an inclusive government representative of the Christian minority, women, and liberals.

In the country's last major vote, a hotly disputed constitutional referendum in December, ElBaradei urged his supporters at the last minute to participate and vote "No" after a debate within the opposition over whether to boycott.

The referendum was mired in controversy and rights groups criticized unchecked voting irregularities.

The Islamists, accused of ramming the charter through a drafting panel that they dominated, won passage by more than 60 percent, but turnout was low around 30 percent. Critics said the document opened the way for imposing Islamic law more strictly in Egypt.

Tensions soared in the run-up to the vote, with violent clashes between pro- and anti-government protesters that led to bloodshed outside the presidential palace.

Almost immediately after ElBaradei's boycott call, rifts began to emerge in the opposition. Even members of his opposition bloc, the NSF, said the group had not yet decided on a boycott.

Some activists criticized the call, saying it would alienate the masses and allow the Brotherhood free rein over the lower house of parliament, which writes laws and is supposed to monitor the president.

The Brotherhood already has the most seats in the upper chamber of parliament, largely an advisory body currently serving as an interim parliament. And it also successfully fielded Morsi as its candidate for president.

In Egypt's first free elections in 2011, the Brotherhood won nearly half of seats in parliament and the more conservative Islamists known as Salafis won a quarter.

A splinter Salafi party has emerged since then and competition for seats is expected to be fierce, particularly in Egypt's vast rural areas and poor city slums.

Within months of being elected, the lower house of parliament was disbanded in June of last year after the Supreme Constitutional Court ruled that a third of the chamber's members were elected illegally.

The upcoming elections are to reinstate the legislature.

Liberal and secular parties have trailed significantly in all elections since Mubarak was toppled. Their outreach across Egypt, while growing, is still dwarfed by the Islamists' well organized network of charities and programs that assist the poor.

But at the same time, since Morsi's election as Egypt's first civilian and Islamist president last summer, his popularity has eroded.

Blogger and commentator Mahmoud Salem, a longtime activist who now opposes Morsi, said he disagreed with a boycott because it offers no real alternative to the political impasse.

"Where's ElBaradei's party, its plan, its economic vision? Let's say a boycott is the right answer. What will they do so that they can be competitive in the next election?" Salem said.

He accused ElBaradei of calling for a boycott in part because the opposition has been unable to win significantly at the polls.

"In reality, it will end up as a parliament composed of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafis, or members of the ex-regime," he said.

Others have said they may enter elections, but are criticizing Morsi's timing.

Shadi Taha, a leading figure of al-Ghad al-Thawra party led by former Mubarak rival Ayman Nour, told The Associated Press that the country should be focused first on more pressing issues like the economy, education and health care.

The party has not yet decided if it will boycott.

"The last thing we need is to enter a new cycle that further polarizes and splits the country," Taha said. "First there should be stability. ... Elections should have been delayed to deal with bigger priorities."

On the second anniversary of the Jan. 25 uprising this year, anger at police impunity for abuses and an array of other social woes spilled out onto the streets and violence again engulfed the nation.

About 70 people died in a wave of protests and riots since then ? more than half of them in the restive Suez Canal city of Port Said alone.

A civil disobedience campaign in Port Said entered its seventh day on Saturday. The protesters are demanding retribution for those killed during the recent unrest. There have also been near daily protests in Cairo and in the textile producing city of Mahalla.

Former lawmaker Mostafa al-Naggar, a centrist, said boycott calls will be ineffective unless there is unity among the opposition.

He wrote on Twitter that a boycott "will clear the arena for the ruling party and its allies to dominate the legislative and executive branches."

ElBaradei's opposition coalition, which was only formed late last year, had warned for weeks it could boycott if certain conditions were not met first.

The NSF said it wants a real national dialogue that leads to the formation of a more inclusive government, changes to the constitution and stability.

Egypt's new constitution, approved in late December, says that procedures for elections should begin within two months of the charter being ratified but does not set a deadline for the vote.

Egypt's Coptic Christians complained that elections start around Palm Sunday and Easter, prompting Morsi to review the timing of the vote. Minority Christians have consistently voted against the Brotherhood.

On Saturday, Morsi changed the start of voting to April 22 instead of April 28.

Morsi's supporters say that delaying elections, protesting and boycotting are affecting Egypt's ability to lure foreign investors and tourists again as the economy deteriorates.

Egypt's oldest opposition party, al-Wafd, steered clear of immediately supporting a boycott. Instead, the party said it will file a lawsuit against elections being announced before laws governing the vote are approved.

Former liberal lawmaker Amr Hamzawi , part of ElBaradei's NSF group, told the AP that a boycott might be a good option but ElBaradei's unilateral call may have come prematurely.

"I don't think we need to decide today. But we need to enter a process of collective reflection," he said. "It takes time" for any opposition to translate its movement into societal change and elections victories.

Nymex crude oil prices are trading 0.7 percent lower due to risk aversion amongst the market participants caused by concerns that US Federal Reserve might curb stimulus measures announced sooner than expected. Strength in the DX also weighed on oil prices. Depreciation in the Indian rupee however, restricted fall in the crude oil prices on MCX.

In the evening session, we expect precious, base metals and crude oil prices to trade with negative bias owing to risk aversion amongst the market participants resulting from the concerns that US Federal Reserve might discontinue or slow the bond buying program. Strength in the DX is likely to add to the losses in the commodities. Expectation of rise in the US crude oil inventories would also act as a bearish factor for the crude oil prices.
