Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger dies

Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who guided the newspaper to unprecedented influence and profit during his three-decade tenure, died Saturday at his home in Southampton, N.Y., at the age of 86.

During his 34-year run as publisher, Sulzberger helped the Times navigate some of the most influential events in 20th-century journalism ? everything from the Vietnam War and the publication of the Pentagon Papers, to key legal victories for freedom of the press.

Sulzberger, who went by the nickname "Punch," helped expand the Times to a national edition as it won 31 Pulitzer Prizes under his leadership.

In this 1992 photo, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger poses for a photo in the New York Times boardroom??

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level," said Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt.

Sulzberger took over as publisher in 1963, when the Times had a weekday circulation of 714,000 and $100 million in annual revenue. By the time he turned over the publishing reigns in 1992 to his then 40-year-old son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the newspaper had turned into a media conglomerate, owning newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations as well as online endeavors. It had revenues of $1.7 billion, and its circulation had expanded to 1.1 million, according to AP.

"Above all, he took the quality of the product up to an entirely new level," the late Katharine Graham, chairwoman of The Washington Post Co., said at the time Sulzberger retired as publisher.

Sulzberger remained chairman of The New York Times Co. after passing the role of publisher on to his son. He retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997, when Sulzberger Jr. was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

While Sulzberger might have transformed the New York Times during his tenure as publisher, his death comes at a time when print journalism is in a tailspin, and the industry is trying to navigate a world where people increasingly get their news online.

[Related: Ex-NY Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger dies]

At a conference in September of 2010 his son was asked if the New York Times would print its last edition in 2015.

According to the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers' Web site, "Sulzberger (Jr.) said he saw no point in making such predictions and said all he could say was that "we will stop printing the New York Times sometime in the future, date TBD.""

The Web site clarifies that Sulzberger Jr. "was not making an announcement that the New York Times has definite plans to stop printing in the near future; rather making the point, in a joking fashion, that it is impossible and fruitless to predict exactly when printed newspapers might come to an end."

While the end is debatable, its current state is not good.

According to Paper Cuts, a Web site tracking the newspaper industry, 21 newspapers folded in 2011 and over 1,810 people in the industry have lost their jobs due to buyouts or layoffs in 2012.

[Related: Sulzberger set milestones for NY Times, journalism]

While newspapers have traditionally offered its content for free, that could be changing, with the New York Times playing a major role.

In March 2011, the Times announced that it would "begin charging the most frequent users of its Web site $15 for a four-week subscription in a bet that readers will pay for news they are accustomed to getting free."

Since 2009, 16 newspapers have moved their operations to Web-only versions.

Vanity Fair published an article in 2008 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of what would become the World Wide Web. The article included a discussion of how newspapers viewed the online venture.

"The media people essentially did not think the Internet would be important or disruptive," Vinod Khosla, who helped create Sun Microsystems, said in the magazine. "In 1996, I got together the CEOs of nine of the 10 major newspaper companies in America in a single room to propose something called the New Century Network. It was the CEOs of The Washington Post and The New York Times and Gannett and Times Mirror and Tribune and I forget who else.

"They couldn't convince themselves that a Google, a Yahoo, or an eBay would be important, or that eBay could ever replace classified advertising."

Journalism Web site Poynter.org reports that the decline in print classified advertising went "from $19.6 billion in 2000 to roughly $6 billion in 2009."

According to the Times, Sulzberger "guided The New York Times and its parent company through a long, sometimes turbulent period of expansion and change on a scale not seen since the newspaper's founding in 1851."

It remains to be seen where the company will go now that he's gone.

Only On the Internet Can a Business of ?I? Become a Business of ...

By ShaneCultra - September 29, 2012 - 13 Comments

I laugh every time I see it.? ?We do this, we do that?, all the while I know it?s one person running the show.? Many of the businesses and sites are one man shows yet they always write in the ?we? tense.?? There are a few reasons I believe people seem to feel more comfortable by pretending to be a company or a team, rather than a person.

The first is the most obvious. They want to appear larger or more ?professional? by making us think there are several people working at the company.? That you are not dealing with a a guy working out of his basement office.? ?We work hard to provide you with the best service on the net? actually translates to, ?I check my email a lot?? Or the office just happens to have a bedroom and a kitchen and the website owner actually live.

A second reason is Google.? To get on the Google news feed you have to have more than one author.? This is the reason you see multiple writers listed under the authors sections of blogs even though the entire blog is written by one person.? You need have a few articles written by someone else to qualify. ? I think its a stupid rule of Google?s because one person can handle the workload to keep up quality ,Google worthy articles. Look at the domain blogs that are on the Google feed and it proves it.? Three great guys that do it by themselves.

Finally, it?s a shield.? A shield from the pressures of being the face of an entity.? All praise and blame come right to that one person.? You have to deal with things directly when everyone knows it?s just you. It usually is a legal shield as well.? Reducing the personal liability.? On the Internet you can be several different people.? Nobody sees your face or knows your real name. ?You are only a few keystrokes away from being whomever you like.

Another common act on sites are claiming to be the best or number one.? ?Your #1 source for? something or ?The top choice for? something else.? I?ve always wondered who made them number one.? It?s not ever based on data or some accredited award.? For instance, TNTNames said today ?thank you again and again for making TNTNames.com and making it your number #1 place to find some great domains? . ? I missed the awards ceremony for ?#1 place to find domains?. I thought for sure Godaddy would have at least been nominated.? But we can make any claims we want on the Internet and usually get away with it. They are a great place to find domains, but #1?

And despite all this, it is the same things that make the Internet such a wonderful place to make money.? You don?t need big staff.? You can be number one.? You can be whatever you want.? You have the world at your fingertips.? It?s why most of us will achieve great wealth. We understand this and we are the pioneers of this relatively young space. It?s also the reason that reviews are one of the biggest businesses on the Net.? People need conformation from others that this site is legit because there are so many sites. That whether it?s one person or 1000, they can deliver what they promise.? That multiple others agree that they are number one.? And that leads me to the secret to building a business on the net.? Not the big claims or pretend company payroll, it?s building trust.? A trust that that can?t be built through posted claims but real reviews, word of mouth, and articles from trusted sources.? Everything else is a facade.

8 Tips To Handle A Screaming Child - Ayushveda

VN:D [1.9.20_1166]

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Tips To Handle A Screaming ChildYou have a planned day ? first the Parents Teacher Meeting, followed by shopping, then back home. But unfortunately, while you are in the midst of shopping, your ?small wonder? starts behaving monstrously and you are in no mood to tolerate anything now and spoil your whole day (what to mention about the mood).

However, with a screaming and yelling child, you cannot continue either. Your other one, a 9 year old, is too small to care of the menace and you need immediate respite from the glaring eyes. Both of you may be staring at each other bewildered.

First understand that you are probably not alone calculating seconds before your little one calms down. It is a common problem among children of young age group (especially pre-schoolers). Sadly, what may work once may essentially not work always (your child can be too smart at negating your efforts).

However, this does not mean you should give up and do nothing but undergo the embarrassment. There are some quick fixes which can be tried. However, strategy holds the key when handling a screaming child over sustained basis. Read on to explore some really useful ways to handle a screaming child. One can work better than the other, depending on the temperament of your child. Effectiveness depends considerably on how you implement them.

Ways to?Handle A Screaming Child

Distract or Divert From the Trigger

Having found your child?s stickiness, try to divert his/her attention at the earliest before the situation becomes troubling for either of you. And remember, when you want to divert or distract attention, you have got to be quick at switching attention to something (more) interesting but soothing. This technique can work well with toddlers or very small children; but do not count on this trick always as your child can be too smart to outdo your trick much before you thought.

Find Solitude and Seclusion

It can happen that even though you have tried many things, your child would not co-operate and calm down. In such a situation, you can take your child to a secluded or private place and try relaxing him/her. Sometimes, all he/she may crib for is a little of your warm touch minus public stance.

If you are at a public place, choose a separate area (where less people are present). When at home, you can go to another room where you are alone with the child. Spend some time together, and while you console your child, try asking the reason for restlessness.

Refrain from Giving in and Bribing

You may consider that if you bribe your child or give in to his/her demand, it can calm the situation. But this can bring only a temporary respite, and more that often, aggravate the situation. You may find it more difficult to handle the situation later when it strikes with (may be) a magnified spectrum.

Acknowledge your child?s feelings and help him/her work through it. But do not bribe your child of an unjust thing for buying peace and calmness. This can raise expectations for more bribes to follow. And then, you may find yourself helpless.

Make use of Structure and Strategy

Screaming or other tantrums may not be an extraordinary thing to discover in a child. It may come of age and, often, retreats spontaneously. However, once you observe this behavior it is important that you train your child by implementing a strategy.

deal with screaming child

If you lack structure, you cannot expect to find a solution every time your child puts you in a challenging situation by screaming or shouting. It can also happen that your child may imbibe your instructions as commands and create fertile ground for power struggles to erupt quite often.

When your child is calm and receptive, implement a way of de-personalizing events and instructions. For instance, dinner time is only meant for eating and enjoying food, not watching television (provided you also refrain from doing the same). Gradually, your child shall adopt and attune to the structure and reflect less of unfavorable reactions.

No Reaction to the Action

True that it is, every action has a reaction. However, sometimes the best reaction is no reaction or ignorance. This is especially applicable to older (and seemingly mature) child who throws tantrums to gain attention. The message conveyed should be clear that his/her unjust demands would not be adhered to for any reason.

If you are uncomfortable of the screaming (or noise), leave the place but do not give in to the temptation to retaliate. Screaming right back can make you a winner in the competition but ultimately none of you shall gain anything out of the drama.

Be a Mirror to your Child

Children can be trained in a good way by citing practical instances. And when the practicality focuses on you (mother or father), he/she can understand even better. So the next time you want to cite an example, include yourself instead of someone else. Children are very keen to follow their parents and mentors.

If your child lives in an environment where you (as parent) yell a lot, then you cannot expect him/her to underperform. The screaming sessions would reduce to a minimum when you keep a check on yourself (or the environment in which the child lives).

?Recapitulate and Repeat

It can be too demanding to sooth a screaming child and simultaneously make him/her understand that what he/she just did was undesirable and unacceptable. Give your child some time to relax and behave normally. When the time is opportune, sit with him/her and discuss about the behavior and its ill effect. Teach anger management techniques and ways to handle an awful or difficult situation.

Pick a pleasant day for conversation. Do not deliver a speech, but exchange notions and views. Avoid getting? deep into discussion and let it be a smooth talk. Continue with the chores but remember to repeat when you feel the need later again. The earlier your child adopts coping skills, the better it is. But give sufficient time before making calculations about reward and punishment.

Incorporate Preventive Measures

Being close to your child, you can surely identify the reason behind his/her screaming and undesirable behaviors. Identify when, why and how tantrums occur. After finding the trigger, try eliminating it whenever possible.

Often, you can find a pattern of events which sets the stage for drama. Break the league and inhibit the pattern. This stage shall pass soon with consistent efforts from your end.

NASA's Curiosity Finds Water Once Flowed On Mars

NASA

NASA says it has found proof that water shaped the rocks on the left, in a photograph taken by the Mars rover Curiosity (left). For comparison, the agency released an image of rocks from the Earth (right).

NASA's newest Mars rover, Curiosity, has snapped photos of rocky outcroppings that jut out from the alien soil, and scientists say they look like the remnants of an ancient stream bed where water once flowed on the surface of the red planet.

The exposed rocks look like broken slabs of cement sidewalk, about four inches thick, and they are made of rounded bits of gravel in a sandy matrix. The rock has eroded a little bit, and some of the smooth pebbles -? about the size of M&M candies ? have fallen down into a little pile.

Scientists looked at all this, and came to this conclusion: "This is a rock that was formed in the presence of water," says John Grotzinger, project scientist for the mission at the California Institute of Technology.

And not just any water, but a flowing stream.

Scientists have believed for a long time that Mars once had liquid water on its surface. Orbiting spacecraft can see canyons that must have been carved by water. In fact, researchers deliberately picked Curiosity's landing site because it looked like a place where a canyon stream had spilled water onto a plain ? and now it looks like they were right.

Before, we never really saw a rock on Mars where we could tell whether it was wind or water that was doing the transport. And now we have a clear sign of flowing water on Mars and we can get estimates of the size of the flow and so on. It's really fascinating.

Jim Bell, a planetary scientist at Arizona State University who is working on this mission, says the rounded pebbles and cemented sandstones look like what you would find if you were "walking up a stream in your favorite little canyon somewhere. These are all telling us that there was water really flowing across the surface there, and probably pretty deep water ? ankle-deep, knee-deep water ? like you'd have in an occasional desert flood on the Earth, in the Southwest, for example."

Other researchers agree that this is convincing evidence of flowing water. Peter Doran, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says the rounded grains in that rock are big enough that they couldn't have been carried and smoothed by the wind.

"Before, we never really saw a rock on Mars where we could tell whether it was wind or water that was doing the transport," Doran says. "And now we have a clear sign of flowing water on Mars and we can get estimates of the size of the flow and so on. It's really fascinating."

Other Mars rovers have seen some evidence of water, but nothing like this. Andrew Knoll, a planetary sciences professor at Harvard University, says earlier rovers saw things that could be associated with groundwater that might occasionally bubble up -? not the kind of flowing surface water that made these newly discovered rocks.

"Something happened on Mars that simply doesn't happen today," Knoll says. "And that is, there was water flowing at high rates over the Martian surface. That's really what they've found."

Water is important, of course, because it's needed for life. And Curiosity's main mission is to search for evidence that Mars was once capable of supporting life. Its mission is expected to last about two years.

Soil samples to be taken in Hoffa body claim

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) ? State investigators will take soil samples from outside a home in suburban Detroit as police continue looking into a man's claim that a body he says he saw buried in a backyard 35 years ago might have been that of missing Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa.

The samples are set to be removed Friday morning from beneath the driveway of a home in Roseville and eventually tested for human decomposition.

Hoffa was last seen July 30, 1975, outside a restaurant in Oakland County, more than 30 miles to the west.

The results could put the rest the latest turn in the search for Hoffa's remains.

Previous tips led police to excavate soil in 2006 at a horse farm more than 100 miles north of Detroit, rip up floorboards at a Detroit home in 2004, and search beneath a backyard pool north of the city in 2003.

There were even rumors that Hoffa's remains were ground up and tossed into a Florida swamp, entombed beneath Giants Stadium in New Jersey or obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant.

One local theory was that the body was beneath the foundation of a downtown Detroit hockey stadium, said 57-year-old Cindi Frank, who snapped photos Thursday of the Roseville driveway.

The daughter of a unionized driver and salesman for a Detroit bakery, Frank remembers conversations about Hoffa while he was alive and rumors about his fate.

"It was a family thing. Every time we'd go somewhere we'd say, 'Hey, I wonder if Jimmy Hoffa is buried there?'" Frank said. "It's just been one of those unsolved mysteries that's gone on for 30-something years. If he show up in Roseville ..."

Results of the soil samples taken Friday are not expected before next week.

News of the search has brought attention to the mostly working- and middle-class suburb from the curious and naysayers. Slowly moving vehicles have clogged the residential street as camera-wielding neighbors snapped photos for keepsakes.

"I believe it's him. My sister said it is, and she's a psychic," said Mike Smith after ambling up to the home Thursday and shying a bit from the yellow police tape stretched across the driveway.

Feisty and iron-willed in contract talks, Hoffa was an acquaintance of mobsters and adversary to federal officials. He spent time in prison for jury tampering.

The day he disappeared, Hoffa was supposed to meet with a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit mafia captain. He was declared legally dead in 1982.

At the request of police, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality used ground-penetrating radar last week on the Roseville driveway. An anomaly, or shift, in the soil was detected.

Police Chief James Berlin told The Associated Press on Thursday that his office is "not claiming it's Jimmy Hoffa" beneath the slab but that they are "investigating a body that may be at the location."

Roseville was one of several inner-ring communities that grew quickly as unionized auto factory workers left the city in search of nicer homes and bigger yards.

"Maybe the most inconspicuous spot might be the place to stash a body or something," said 52-year-old Andrew Kacir, who lives across from the taped off driveway.

Recently retired Detroit FBI chief Andrew Arena is among the doubters.

"You've got to check it out, but this doesn't sound right," he told the AP. "The working theories that have developed over the years, this really doesn't fit any of those. If this was the mob and they killed somebody, I just don't see them burying the body basically at the intersection of a residential neighborhood with this guy standing there."

British GENES (British Genealogy News and Events): Was the Ulster ...

Tomorrow sees the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant, signed around the world by half a million folk on September 28th 1912 against the prospect of a Dublin based Home Rule parliament for all of Ireland. BBC Northern Ireland has an interesting piece at www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-politics-19746073 about one piece of Covenant lore, namely that prominent Unionist Major Fred Crawford signed the document in his blood.

A forensic test determined to recognise the iron content of blood has now returned a 90% confidence that the signature was not in fact made in blood - though some Unionists are still holding onto the 10% uncertainty factor!

Whatever the politics of it all, the Covenant is still an important genealogical resource, particularly if your ancestor signed it outside of Ireland, for in many cases the address column was actually filled with the place of origin in Ireland - my own great grandfather Robert Currie, for example, signed the document in Glasgow, and gave Knockloughrim in County Londonderry as his place of origin. The census from the previous year, and in previous decades, simply listed him as from "Ireland".

To view the original signatures of the Ulster Covenant, now held at PRONI, and digitised and made available online, visit www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/ulster_covenant.htm.

And if you are wondering, nine men who signed it in China were not part of a Chinese Orange lodge, but members of a Royal Naval vessel! :)

AIRFLOW MANAGEMENT - Data Center Talk

Data centers consume about 25 to 30 times more electricity compared to the normal office spaces. This calls for an energy efficient design of the data center that can save money and reduce electricity use.

?Data center design is a relatively new stream that contains a dynamic and evolving technology. The most efficient data centers incorporate modern design technologies that are cost-effective and energy efficient. Short design cycles lead to incomplete assessment of the full design requirements. Most of these short design cycles ultimately lead to just scaling up the older versions of design of office spaces.

Modern data centers house server racks in a fashion that leads to concentration of the heat loads. In facilities of different sizes, starting from a small data center for a few office buildings to a large co-location facility; design of the center to precisely control air flow is of utmost importance. Air flow through the room for efficient removal of the accumulated equipment heat has a strong impact on the reliability and the energy efficiency of the entire data center.

Air management includes all the minute details of design that are required to minimize or curtail the mixing of cool air supplied to the room with the hot air rejected from the room. When it is designed correctly, it helps in reducing the operating and maintenance costs of the equipment and other issues caused by the thermal heating of the devices.

The main design issues related to air management are:

  • Location of the data center
  • Location of the cooling equipments
  • Equipments required for intake and exhaust ports
  • Configuration
  • Air flow patterns in the room

Principles of air flow management:

  • Use of hot and cold-aisle configurations can double-up the cooling efficiency of the data center.
  • With the aide of an airside economizer, air management can reduce data center cooling costs by over 60%
  • Removing hot air immediately through the exhaust improves efficiency rather than mixing the hot air with the incoming cold air.
  • Equipment environmental temperature specifications refer primarily to the air being drawn in to cool the system.
  • A higher difference between the return air and supply air temperatures increases the maximum load density possible in the space and can help reduce the size of the cooling equipment required, particularly when lower-cost mass produced package air handling ?units are used.
  • Poor airflow management will reduce both the efficiency and capacity of computer room cooling equipment.

?Therefore an effective air flow management system can bring down the costs and power consumption rates to a great extent. Design of these systems also play a very important role in the quality, reliability, and security of data centers.

Consumer Report: Getting Good Health Insurance

Finding a good health insurance plan is one of the most important decisions you can make. And it?s just gotten a lot easier. Insurers are now required to use a new form that describes in plain English deductibles and other costs. For the first time, every plan will have a form that looks exactly the same, which will make it much easier to compare them side by side.

Consumer Reports is also releasing an analysis of almost a 1,000 health care plans to help consumers choose the best options. Consumer Reports analyzed 984 private, Medicare and Medicaid health-insurance plans ranked by the National Committee for
Quality Assurance, or NCQA, a nonprofit accreditation organization. The rankings take a number of factors into consideration, including customer satisfaction and how good a job the plan does on treatment and prevention.

On the plus side, the quality of care has improved. But Consumer Reports says there are troubling trends as well. There are treatments and tests that have been shown not to be helpful, yet research shows many are still being overused. That?s not only a waste of money, but you could end up getting treatments that are unnecessary, and
sometimes even dangerous.

Turns out the providers of the top ten private plans are all non-profits which means they don?t have to worry about turning a profit for investors, they only have to worry about pleasing their customers. In the rankings, big name for-profit companies-- UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Humana--had more private plans at the bottom than at
the top.

A note about the rankings Consumer Reports used in its analysis ? insurance company plans that are accredited by the NCQA are allotted a certain number of points. Not all insurance plans are accredited ? and some are accredited by another organization.
There is a fee involved for any accreditation. Consumer Reports says getting accredited is an important step because it shows insurers are willing to report on their plans performance and that has led to improved performance.

WWF Publishes Guide to Responsible Commodities Investing ...

The WWF today released a guide to responsible investing in commodities.

The report, The 2050 Criteria Guide to Responsible Investment in Agricultural, Forest, and Seafood Commodities, is backed by Credit Suisse and addresses 10 commodity sectors: aquaculture; beef; cotton; dairy; palm oil; soy; sugar; timber, pulp and paper; wild-caught seafood; and bioenergy.

WWF says these sectors are high priority because of their affects on global biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and water use.

An increase in population and consumption between 1961 and 2008 has led to a decline in biocapacity per person (see chart), according to WWF. It says in 2008, the Earth?s total biocapacity was 12 billion hectares, while the population?s ecological footprint was 18.2 billion hectares, meaning it would take 1.5 years for the Earth to regenerate the renewable resources that humans use in one year.

The 2050 Criteria outline environmental and social risks associated with each sector ? biodiversity loss and conversion; climate change and air quality; soil erosion and degradation; water use; pesticides and toxicity; nutrient loading and eutrophication; disease and animal care; labor; local and indigenous communities; and society and consumers ? and ?key performance criteria? for identifying environmentally and socially responsible companies and projects.

WWF works with global companies in the food, agriculture and consumer goods sectors, and says major players are taking steps to address resource challenges. It says examples of this include industry roundtables on palm oil, soy, sugarcane, cotton and forest products, and cooperation between Unilever, Tesco, McDonald?s, and other companies on whitefish stock sustainability. It also cites The Sustainability Consortium, led by Walmart, and its efforts to establish an industry-wide sustainability labeling system for consumer goods.

A June report by Deutsche Bank?s climate change investment research group found companies with high ratings for corporate social responsibility and environmental, social and governance factors have a lower cost of capital and are a lower risk to investors.

Boise police on alert over neo-Nazi music festival

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? The Boise mayor's office is fielding numerous complaints about a neo-Nazi music festival planned for early October, the city's police department said.

Authorities have been on alert since advertisements for Hammerfest 2012 near Boise surfaced online, said Sgt. Jeff Basterrechea, who is with the police department's gang intelligence unit. The white supremacist group Hammerskin Nation plans to hold the event Oct. 6, according to the flier circulating online.

"This is a very high priority," Basterrechea said. "The mayor's office has received numerous complaints about this."

The skinhead group is rooted in Texas and has branches in Australia and Canada, according to the SITE Monitoring Service, a private intelligence firm that searches the Internet for extremist activity. The gunman who killed six worshippers at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin last month described himself as a member.

The group has not disclosed the exact location of the planned Idaho event and attempts to contact local Hammerskin chapters were unsuccessful, KTVB-TV reported (http://bit.ly/OpRh7N ). Police are working with local venues to make them aware of the group, Basterrechea said.

Former neo-Nazi skinhead Marine T.J. Leyden told the news station he previously recruited for the group with events like Hammerfest. Leyden, who famously left the movement in 1996 and has promoted tolerance ever since, said the Boise event will be used to boost the group's numbers.

"They're going to say, 'Hey, come to this show.' These kids are going to see it, they're going to get all pumped up, they're going to think it's fantastic," said Leyden, who cautioned that protesters should stay away and allow law enforcement to monitor the event.

"The group is extremely violent. The Hammerfests that they throw in different parts of the country are designed for a couple things. One it's designed for unity, but it's also designed to get people's anxiety up," Leyden said.

"My best suggestion is let law enforcement handle these guys. Don't go out and counter-protest. This is what they want. They want counter-protesters yelling, screaming and hollering out there to make them feel like they're big, tough men."

The Homeland Security Department has previously issued reports on individual foreign and domestic extremist groups such as al-Qaida and Hammerskin Nation. The Hammerskin assessment said many of the group's members received military training and fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Novel materials become multifunctional at ultimate quantum limit

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas physicist and his colleagues have examined the lower limits of novel materials called complex oxides and discovered that unlike conventional semiconductors the materials not only conduct electricity, but also develop unusual magnetic properties.

Jak Chakhalian, Jian Liu, Derek Meyers and Benjamin Gray of the University of Arkansas and John W. Freeland and Phillip Ryan of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory present their ideas in Physical Review Letters.

"Contrary to what we have today in modern microelectronics devices based on silicon, here in a single quantum well, which is just four nanometers thick, we now have several functionalities in one device layer," said Chakhalian, professor of physics and holder of the Charles and Clydene Scharlau Chair in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "Engineers can use this class of material to devise new multifunctional devices based on the electrons' spin."

The microelectronic materials -- semiconductors -- used in today's computers, have almost reached the lower limitation for size and functionality. Computers run on several semiconducting devices layered together in the very smallest of spaces, known as quantum wells, where nanoscale layers of a semiconducting material are sandwiched between two nanoscale layers of a non-conducting material. However, the researchers found that by using complex oxides with correlated electrons confined to quantum well geometry, they added a new dimension to the mix.

The new structure is based on the concept of correlated charge carriers, like those found in rust, or iron oxide. In rust, if one electron does something, all of the other electrons "know" about it. This phenomenon, called correlated electrons, does not exist in silicon-based materials that run today's computers, televisions, complex medical equipment, power cell phones and keep the electricity on in homes.

"In normal materials used today, electrons don't care about the movement of one another," Chakhalian said. "We can predict their properties almost on the 'back of an envelope' with the help of powerful computers." However, with correlated materials, the calculations for the movement of one electron involve tracking the interactions with billions of electrons, and this is beyond modern theory capabilities.

Chakhalian and his colleagues went down to four atomic layers of a correlated complex oxide material based on nickel and sandwiched it in between two layers of non-conducting oxide material based on aluminum. Unlike the semiconducting materials, the complex oxide structure revealed the unexpected presence of both electronic and magnetic properties.

These multiple properties in a single material may allow the semiconductor industry to push the limits of current conventional computers and develop multiple functions for a single device, possibly allowing everyday electronics to become smaller and faster than they are today.

Chakhalian is a professor in the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering.

Effective Strategies To Market Your Business On The Internet ...

This article has been viewed 6 times.

As the Internet becomes more and more important to our daily lives, companies that want to succeed, need to focus their marketing efforts on the Internet. Read this article to learn more about Internet marketing and how you could develop a campaign that is adapted to your audience. The information below will get you started and show you how powerful Internet marketing can be.

You can develop your website to look and feel more like a social gathering or club than a business website. Social media is huge online, and offering these types of features may just bring in a lot of customers who will form visiting habits over time. This helps to keep your website at the front of people?s minds. Include graphics that people can copy and use on their sites to advertise yours.

Choose a charity to support. When picking a charity, choose one that would be popular with your customers, and announce that you will be donating a percentage of all profits to them. This will allow you to market your business to a wide variety of customers and will help increase your image. Your image will grow and reshape and your customers will want to give you business over many other people.

Promotional initiatives of limited duration can be a great way to gain better page rankings for your website. If the deal is good enough, you can ?buy? PageRank because consumer news and deals sites will link to yours. This would be similar to a retail store selling an item for a loss in order to increase business at a later time.

Use press releases! Writing interesting and concise press releases and announcements can often be placed on free online publications and other industry news sites. This is a quick and easy way to raise your visibility.

Listen to people?s gripes and you may just find a great market niche in solving those common problems. Why do they feel this way? This is a great way to find common problems that need solutions. After you have identified a handful of problems you wish to resolve in a specific subject, you will be able to brainstorm for solutions. This can give you your market niche, which can create a competitive advantage on others.

Typically, the average consumer will not believe everything that you say in advertisements. For years, advertising has been misleading. Consequently, you need to offer evidence for everything you say on your website. Employ customer reviews, informative articles, links to reputable websites and images to help legitimize your website. This helps back up your reputation and can get people to trust you. Make customers feel as if you view them as smart and informed. You should never take advantage of your customers. Your willingness to conduct open and honorable business practices will garner you a loyal following of customers who will share word of your services with their family and friends.

While Internet marketing may seem daunting, it uses the same basic principles as traditional marketing. If you utilize these tips, you will gain much success in your venture

FTC Family of Companies Launches the Teacher Gaming Network for

BLOOMINGTON, IL (PRWEB) September 18, 2012

Today, FTC Family of Companies launched their new Teacher Gaming Network, providing a free online system for teachers to create custom interactive games for their classroom. Teachers have complete control of the content during their game creation, as they enter their own questions and answers in various formats. Once their questions are entered, they can choose to create a game from several different game styles. Once created, they can either play the games online with their students as a class activity, or provide the custom game link for the students to play on their own, whether at home, in the library or lab, or from any internet connected computer.

The goal of the Teacher Gaming Network (TGN) is to provide teachers throughout the country with a new medium for reviewing their class content and to get their students excited about the curriculum being taught. While there are many good online products that support specific curriculum units, Teacher Gaming Network was designed to give the teacher control of the actual content of the game, says Michael Kessler, President of FTC Family of Companies. FTC has been developing interactive game products for K-12 education for over 15 years, and decided it was time to take our K-12 gaming experience online. Giving teachers anytime/anywhere access to create games, whether for lesson review or content mastery, provides them with a tool-set unmatched in their technology driven classroom, he adds.

Nokia Mix Radio: free Nokia Lumia music app

With smartphone hardware coming closer together performance-wise, it is important for manufacturers to make available features that distinct a particular brand or phone from offerings of competing manufacturers. Nokia Lumia owners for instance get free access to Nokia Mix Radio ? also know as Nokia Music ? that is providing them with free access to Nokia?s 15 million track catalog.

Instead of having to pay $10 or so for a streaming music service like T-Mobile?s Spotify flatrate, Lumia owners get access to the music catalog for free and without the need to create an account first. Streaming costs may still apply depending on the subscription plan.

Nokia Music makes available carefully selected mixes on the apps start page which you can listen to right away. If you want, you can pin the playlists to the startpage of your phone for quick access and making the music available for offline hearing. Up to 14 hours of music can be made available offline this way automatically.

nokia music

According to Nokia, you find more than one hundred different channels with 50 to 200 songs each on Nokia Music ranging from global charts to dance, rap or best of British. Instead of listening to mixes created by Nokia, you can alternatively create your own personal mixes by entering artist names in the app. Mix Radio will use the information to create a custom playlist based on the selections. This works similar to what Pandora Radio and related services are offering.

The personalization feature is another interesting feature of the Nokia Music app. It scans your personal music collection to create custom playlists based on the music that you already have on your home computer.

Add to that options to buy mp3 using the built-in store or discovering live music using the gig finder which not only highlights gigs but also displays directions and options to buy tickets using the app.

The Nokia Mix Radio app is one of those features that I have talked about earlier. It sets Nokia apart from other manufacturers who are not including features like this in their phones.

What?s your take? Will Nokia get the curve with the upcoming Windows Phone 8 releases? (via Caschy)
