Ever thought the old wooden door to your lounge looks much better than the new one you just bought from the hardware store? You wouldn?t be the only one. There?s a lot to be said for a distressed finish; it?s more interesting to look at and just has more character. Luckily, you don?t have to wait forty years to get this effect. Distress it yourself using these handy tips to help you out.
Pick an imperfect door
The first step is to pick an imperfect interior or exterior door. Look for one that?s uneven or has cracks and knots in it ? it?ll save you some time later. Also, the softer the wood is, the easier it?ll be to make marks on.
Put some dings in it
Once you?ve selected your door, you?ll want to put some dings and dents in it. A popular technique is to use a bagful of metal screws. Drop and bang the bag on the door?s surface until it gains a few marks and looks like it has seen some action. Another way of achieving a similar (but subtler) effect is to find a metal chain and beat the door to create lots of small dimples.
Smooth the edges
As well as these more obvious marks, you?ll want to smooth down the door?s sharp edges. This can be done with sand paper or a metal file. Go along the edges to make them more rounded ? and you can also work into the edges in several places to create pronounced notches that look like the door has been chipped over its lifetime.
Vary the marks
To really make the door look older, it?s necessary to vary the marks a bit. Try hitting the door many times in the same place with a hammer to give a slightly dented ?something happened? look. You can also give it some more pronounced scratch marks by gouging it with a screwdriver, and if you?re feeling really brave, make it look truly ?reclaimed? by adding some nail holes.
The final sand down
Once you?re satisfied with the damage done, the last thing is make all these new marks look old. Do this by rubbing them over with a piece of sandpaper. It?s worth spending a bit of time on this bit; a lovingly distressed door requires some elbow grease and doesn?t just happen in a few minutes.
