Renovated terminal to be unveiled at LA airport

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A newly renovated terminal at Los Angeles International Airport could make it tough to remember there's a plane to catch.

When it opens in August, the cavernous Tom Bradley International Terminal will highlight the excesses of Los Angeles, with a lineup of duty-free shops featuring luxe boutiques such as Hermes and Gucci. Its Parisian bar features champagne and caviar that passengers can carry onto a plane.

Liquor is a key fixture for travelers with expensive taste, with one shop offering a $20,000 bottle of cognac.

The terminal is part of a $4.1 billion upgrade at the nation's third-busiest airport that seeks to elevate the reputation of the facility from a place some travelers try to avoid to one they don't want to leave. The new terminal's 150,000-square-foot Great Hall will be named Villaraigosa Pavilion after the city's outgoing mayor.

Michael Lawson, president of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners, said Asian travelers are among those expected to be attracted by the terminal that will eventually include 18 gates, nine of which can accommodate the double-decker Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger plane that holds more than 800 people.

Meanwhile, a destination board features two side screens that show images and information on destinations when flight information changes for a particular city. People traveling to Hong Kong, for example, would see their departure time alongside a ship with red sails floating on the South China Sea or a map with factoids about Hong Kong's history.

There's an 80-foot "Welcome Wall" that greets arriving passengers with a series of visual cascades, ranging from a flowing cloudscape to an LA shoreline. Throughout the 50,000-square-foot lobby are 60 retailers and restaurants.

Although it's behind schedule and still two years from full completion, the $1.9 billion terminal is being showcased in advance with media tours and open houses for the public. Three new gates are in operation, with five more to be opened by the end of summer.

Curtis Fentress, the project's architect, said one of the biggest challenges was translating the multifaceted identity of Los Angeles into physical forms.

"We spent a lot of time trying to understand the culture and what really makes this place unique," Fentress said. "What did people want the airport to be?"

At meetings around the city, the public was asked to tell designers what they thought reflected the city. Hollywood and the ocean were common responses. And so, for example, the terminal roof was built to look like ocean waves, a nod to the city's beach lifestyle.

While construction continues, there is a legal fight over other aspects of the project, notably moving a runway closer to neighboring homes. Opponents of the expansion raised concerns over the effects of noise, traffic and air-quality from modernizing the airport.

Los Angeles World Airports, which operates and manages the airport, said the project is built in a way that minimizes environmental harm to surrounding areas, including the designation of specific routes for construction vehicles to and from the site, and using equipment with emission and noise reduction devices.

(AP) ? A musical inspired by the music of Tupac Shakur hopes to bring gangsta rap to a Broadway stage.

A workshop of "Holler If Ya Hear Me" is currently under way in New York under the direction of Kenny Leon, who helmed the Broadway hits "Fences" and "The Mountaintop." The new musical sets Shakur's music to an original story and hopes to be ready for the 2013-2014 Broadway season.

Producers said Monday the musical is set in a Midwestern industrial city during present time and tells the story of two childhood friends "as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions."

Rapper and actor Shakur, who had multimillion-seller albums like "2Pacalypse Now" and "All Eyez on Me," was killed in September 1996 as he sat in a car in Las Vegas. He was 25 and known for his raw lyrics that drew on the rage of a coarse urban existence.

The new musical has a book by Todd Kreidler, who was a dramaturg for "Radio Golf" and "Gem of the Ocean," and choreography by Tony Award-winner Wayne Cilento of "Wicked" and "Sweet Charity." Afeni Shakur, the late artists' mother, is a producer.

JOHANNESBURG - Nelson Mandela?s health has deteriorated and he is now in critical condition, the South African government said Sunday.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that he had visited the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening and was informed by the medical team that Mandela?s condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

?The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,? Zuma said in the statement, using Mandela?s clan name.

Zuma also met Graca Machel, Mandela?s wife, at the hospital in Pretoria and discussed the former leader?s condition, according to the statement. Zuma was accompanied on the visit by Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of the country?s ruling party, the African National Congress.

Mandela, who became South Africa?s first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994, was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

In the statement, Zuma also discussed the government?s acknowledgement a day earlier that an ambulance carrying Mandela to the hospital two weeks ago had engine trouble, requiring the former president to be transferred to another ambulance for his journey to the hospital.

?There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care,? Zuma said. ?The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report.?

Zuma appealed to South Africans and the rest of the world to pray for Mandela, his family and the medical team that is attending to him.

On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other leaders of the African National Congress to Mandela?s home. Zuma said at the time that Mandela was in good shape, but the footage ? the first public images of Mandela in nearly a year ? showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.

Mandela was jailed for 27 years under white racist rule and was released in 1990. He then played a leading role in steering the divided country from the apartheid era to democracy, becoming South Africa?s first black president in all-race elections in 1994.

As a result of his sacrifice and peacemaking efforts, he is seen by many around the world as a symbol of reconciliation.

Stripe's Payments Payout Technology For Collaborative Consumption Startups Now Processing $500K Per Day

screen-shot-2012-07-09-at-5-10-22-pm-1-1-1A few weeks ago, payments startup Stripe made it significantly easier for collaborative consumption startups to take and process payments. The company's new technology allowed for payments to be distributed to multiple bank accounts, which is an issue for startups like Lyft, which are attempting to pay drivers with different accounts from the accounts of users. Stripe says that the service has taken off, and the company is now paying out around $500,000 per day in these payouts to collaborative consumption startups alone.

98% Before Midnight

All Critics (138) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (134) | Rotten (3)

Hawke and Delpy remain as charming as ever, and their combined goofiness is more endearing than annoying.

Love is messy here, life cannot be controlled, satisfaction is far from guaranteed. Romance is rocky at best. But romance still is.

Though "Before Midnight" is often uncomfortable to watch, it's never less than mesmerizing - and ultimately, a joy to walk with this prickly but fascinating couple again.

"Before Midnight" is heartbreaking, but not because of Jesse and Celine. It's the filmmakers' passions that seem to have cooled.

Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.

How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.

Marvelous. It's impossible to shake the feeling that we are merely eavesdropping on reality. Witty, wise, and -- most important of all -- truly romantic in ways that movies usually aren't.

It's been 18 years since Hawke, Delpy and Linklater introduced us to Jesse and Celine, and their story just gets richer, funnier and more punchy each time we see them. In 1995's Before Sunrise, they were idealistic 23-year-olds.

Hawke and Delpy are as believably real as any screen couple can ever be.

This is one of the few sequels for which the cliche 'eagerly awaited' is truly applicable.

Predictably, it's just as great as the first two.

By the end, Before Midnight inches towards a dawn of charm. But it's a troubled trip.

As an organic experiment in collaboration between actors and director, it is a triumph, co-created and co-owned by Delpy, Linklater and Hawke.

Hawke and Delpy, who are both credited on the script too, have never found co-stars to bounce off more nimbly or bring out richer nuances in their acting.

The performances and dialogue are wonderfully naturalistic; a reminder that the best special effects are often the cheapest.

Before Midnight is about the nature of long-term relationships, and the way love deepens and grows but also finds itself subject to the complications of maturity. Smart, insightful, and poignant.

For those who witnessed Jesse and Celine's tentative getting together as inter railing students almost twenty years ago, it's reassuring to see them still in love.

Brilliantly directed, superbly written and impeccably acted, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging drama that perfectly complements the previous two films.

It remains as engaging, illuminating, honest and funny as its predecessor; here's hoping we revisit Jesse and C?line in another decade or so.

Nine-year gaps between films would sink a studio franchise, but the unforgiving impact of time and the slipperiness of its mysterious mental record, memory, are the very subjects of 'Before Midnight.'

Contains more shrewd and candid insights than many Hollywood midlife crisis dramas.

A couple persistently digging at each other might have been insufferable to watch except that Hawke and Delpy manage to be goofy, funny, witty and charming, even while they're fighting.

A bit tarter than its predecessors, but not skimping on their woozy, chatty charm, this perfectly played, gently incisive film is a welcome new chapter in one of cinema's most beguiling ongoing romances.

Director Richard Linklater's life-affirming Before trilogy is the Lord of the Rings of the art-house experience, the Toy Story of the American indie movement.

Whatever wins Best Picture for 2013 ... long after that film's glory fades, actors, writers, cinephiles, and lovers will still lavish Before Midnight with praise.

Grief-stricken Zito helps Giants beat Marlins

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:42 p.m. ET June 22, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Even after his father's passing this week, Barry Zito planned to pitch on turn Saturday just three days later.

And pitch he did.

Zito tossed seven impressive innings with a heavy heart to keep the San Francisco Giants in the game, and they won it 2-1 on Hector Sanchez's bloop single with one out in the 11th inning to snap a nine-game home losing streak to the Miami Marlins.

"I'm doing all right," Zito said. "I went out there today and was able to keep my stuff down for the most part. ... I wanted to stay on turn and help the ballclub the best I can. It was good to be able to go out there and throw. I just try to minimize distractions and take the mound regardless of what it is. Some things are a little heavier than others."

Giants right fielder Hunter Pence made a diving catch to rob Placido Polanco of a likely go-ahead single to end the 11th as Miami left runners on first and second in back-to-back innings. The Giants beat the Marlins at home for the first time since July 28, 2010.

Mike Dunn (2-2) allowed Gregor Blanco's infield single to start the 11th. Ryan Webb relieved and gave up Buster Posey's infield single. Pence was intentionally walked and Sanchez singled to left for his third game-ending hit.

Blanco hit a tying double in the fifth for the Giants.

Sergio Romo struck out Giancarlo Stanton to end the eighth but yielded Polanco's leadoff single in the 10th. After a strikeout of Jeff Mathis, Javier Lopez relieved and gave up a base hit to pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs. Sandy Rosario (2-0) entered and struck out Justin Ruggiano and Ed Lucas, pumping his fists when the inning ended.

Lucas hit his first career home run as the Marlins grabbed a quick lead on Zito in the first, and added a pair of singles. He traded a signed bat for the souvenir home run ball.

"I think some kid caught it in the outfield," Lucas said. "They were yelling at him to throw it back. He held onto it. It was a pretty good decision for him."

Zito took the mound following the Wednesday death of his dad, Joe, at age 84. The left-hander spent that day in Southern California.

"Barry's the ultimate professional, but when you lose a family member, especially a parent, I can't imagine what he was going through," Posey said. "He stuck to his routine and gave us a great performance."

The pitcher told Bruce Bochy he planned to stay on schedule and make his Saturday start - and the sellout crowd of 41,683 showed its support with a roaring standing ovation when Zito walked off the mound in the seventh to end his outstanding day.

Zito allowed one run on six hits, struck out five and walked two in a second straight no-decision.

The Marlins' nine-game winning streak at AT&T Park was the club's longest in franchise history against any opponent.

The nine victories in a row in San Francisco tied the second-longest unbeaten run in the team's waterfront ballpark with the Padres from July 2, 1995, to Sept. 16, 1996. The Los Angeles Dodgers won 11 in a row in San Francisco from Aug. 19, 2006, to July 15, 2007.

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford was 0 for 4 while returning to the lineup after missing three games with two sprained fingers on his right hand.

The Giants missed a chance in the first on Blanco's baserunning blunder. He and Marco Scutaro started the inning with consecutive singles, then Posey flied out to shallow center and Marcell Ozuna threw out Blanco at second when he was caught off the bag after taking an early jump.

In the second, Juan Perez reached on a two-out walk only to be picked off at first. Scutaro grounded into an inning-ending double play in the third for yet another squandered chance. Perez was thrown out at the plate in the fifth on a squeeze attempt.

In the fifth, Blanco was credited with an RBI double after a fan reached over the 20-foot wall in right field and snatched the ball on a high bounce. Blanco was then moved to third, as it is the umpires' discretion to determine where they thought the baserunner would have ended up without the interference.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond received his first career ejection as a skipper for arguing the ruling.

"I thought initially it was a ground-rule double. He called fan interference," Redmond said. "I just didn't think Barry Zito would have scored from first."

Bochy, meanwhile, thought Blanco might have had an inside-the-park homer otherwise.

The 31-year-old Lucas was a career minor leaguer who logged 925 games while trying to break into the big leagues, including six of his 10 minor league years at Triple-A. He finally got his shot on May 30 - eight days after turning 31 - when he made his major league debut as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning against Tampa Bay.

Marlins starter Jacob Turner, facing the Giants for the first time in his career, hung tough in his duel with Zito. Turner singled in the fifth for his first major league hit.

A day after going 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position, San Francisco didn't convert in such situations until Posey's hit - putting the Giants at 4 for 25 in the first three games.

NOTES: Stanton had a 10-game hitting streak against San Francisco snapped. ... Giants OF Andres Torres hobbled through the clubhouse with his right knee wrapped in ice a day after injuring it on a slide trying to stretch a double into a triple. He was still sore and had swelling in the knee, but improved enough that Bochy considered him a possibility to play Sunday's series finale. ... Marlins Spanish radio voice, Felo Ramirez, celebrated his 90th birthday. ... Redmond had one ejection during his 13-year playing career.

Dunkin' Donuts' reboot: More drinks, fewer donuts

Dunkin' Donuts is shifting their branding and image away from donuts to beverages and breakfast sandwiches. The ad featuring an early-morning donut baker is retired, replaced by 'America runs on Dunkin' '

Paul Carbone, chief financial officer for?Dunkin' Brands Group Inc., said at the Jefferies Global Consumer Conference Tuesday that the company gets asked all the time when it's going to bring back the ad starring the perpetually tired baker who gets up early every morning to make doughnuts.

"He's not coming back," Carbone said, noting that the chain's focus has shifted toward beverages, which are the "holy grail" when it comes to profitability. Hence the company's plans to stand by its "America Runs on Dunkin' " motto, which was launched in 2006.

In recent years, however, the chain has also been expanding its breakfast sandwiches, which Carbone said are "right below the beverages" in terms of profitability.

Dunkin', which has more than 7,300 U.S. locations, said in a recent presentation that both breakfast sandwiches and drinks have profit margins of more than 75 percent; the presentation didn't include the margins for doughnuts.

Dunkin' says the "Time to make the doughnuts" ads ran for 15 years until 1997, when the actor who played Fred the Baker announced his retirement under a giant inflatable doughnut in Boston.

The actor, Michael Vale, died in 2005.

Dunkin' Brands Group, which is based in Canton, Mass., also owns Baskin-Robbins.

(AP) ? Alain Vigneault wasn't out of work for long.

Just more than four weeks after he was fired by the Vancouver Canucks, Vigneault took over as coach of the New York Rangers on Friday ? replacing the blustery John Tortorella three weeks after his dismissal.

Vigneault edged out former Rangers captain Mark Messier, longtime former Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff and others in landing the job as New York's new bench boss.

He was given a five-year deal.

"I was thinking about the opportunity to coach the New York Rangers, one of the Original Six teams," the 52-year-old Vigneault said. "There is not a chance I could pass that up. Honored and privileged I feel at this moment."

In 11 seasons as an NHL head coach with Montreal and Vancouver, Vigneault is 422-288-35-61 in 806 games.

He was officially introduced during a morning news conference at Radio City Music Hall, which had his name up on the famous marquee outside.

Vigneault was interviewed last week during the Rangers' organizational meetings in California and then met with team owner James Dolan in New York. Messier also had an interview during the club meetings out West.

"We had a list of 13 candidates and I narrowed it down to nine," said Glen Sather, Rangers president and general manager. "I interviewed two in person and four over the phone. It wasn't just between A.V. and Mark."

It is unknown if Messier will remain with the Rangers. He is currently a special assistant to Sather. Messier, a Hockey Hall of Fame player, lacks the coaching experience that Vigneault is loaded with.

Tortorella was fired after 4? seasons with New York on May 29 ? four days after the Rangers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by Boston in five games. A year ago, the Rangers reached the Eastern Conference finals before bowing out against New Jersey.

In an ironic twist, Tortorella was reportedly offered the job on Friday to replace Vigneault in Vancouver.

Speculation that Vigneault was about to be hired by the Rangers increased greatly last weekend, especially after he removed himself from consideration to become coach of the Dallas Stars.

"I want to win," Vigneault said. "Given the opportunity to come here, it was just something that I couldn't turn down. I did find out, though, that it is a lot easier to negotiate yourself a contract when you've got two teams that are after you than just one."

With that, he gave Sather a hearty pat on the back as those in the room broke out in laughter.

"I didn't particularly enjoy that part," Sather said with a smile.

Vigneault posted impressive credentials with the Canucks, ranking first on the franchise list in coaching wins, earning the Presidents' Trophy twice for having the most points in the NHL, winning six Northwest Division titles, and getting within one win of capturing the Stanley Cup in 2011.

In seven seasons as Vancouver's coach, Vigneault was 313-170-57 in the regular season but only 33-32 in the playoffs.

His final two seasons ended in disappointment as Vancouver was knocked out in the first round in both years ? including a sweep by San Jose last month.

The Canucks hadn't been swept in the playoffs in 12 years. The early-round exits when they were the higher-seeded team, and losses at home at the starts of the series were cited by Vancouver president and general manager Mike Gillis as reasons for Vigneault's firing on May 22.

"I am coming here to win," Vigneault said. "There is no doubt in my mind that this organization is committed to winning the Stanley Cup. We've got a lot of great pieces here and we're going to try to improve so that we all get to where we want to be."

Messier captained the Rangers past the Canucks in the seven-game Stanley Cup finals series in 1994. Vancouver lost another Game 7 in the finals against Boston in 2011 ? the Canucks' first trip back to the championship series since the loss to New York 17 years earlier.

Vigneault had a quick lesson in Rangers history as he toured the team's suburban practice facility.

"I saw some of the pictures from the last time this city won the Cup," he said. "It's real clear to me that there is no better place to win the Stanley Cup than here in New York."

Tortorella reached the playoffs in all but one of his five seasons with the Rangers, but his failure to get New York back to a championship level along with his combative nature were likely key factors that led to his firing.

Sather declined to give specifics for the dismissal, saying only that it wasn't one thing or particular incident that caused it.

Video Ad Buying Platform TubeMogul Hires Google Media Platforms Head Chip Scovic As CRO

Chip-Scovic-TubeMogulTubeMogul has come a long way since being founded in 2006. The company, which originally provided an analytics service for video distributors, moved into advertising a couple of years ago. With a platform that brand advertisers can use to systematically purchase online video inventory, it's gotten pretty big since then -- and it keeps getting bigger.

France threatens Google with privacy fines

(AP) ? France is giving Google three months to be more upfront about the data it collects from users ? or be fined. Other European countries aren't far behind.

Now it's up to Google to decide whether the relatively small fines are enough of an incentive to rethink its privacy rules ? the Internet giant risks a ?300,000 euro ($402,180) penalty in France.

Europe's a big market, but one where Google has no serious competition.

However, the company does have a reputation problem when it comes to protecting user privacy. Thursday's legal action puts new pressure on Google, which is smarting from criticism over providing customer data to the U.S. government as part of its fight against foreign terrorists.

The French agency that regulates information technology says that five other European countries are taking similar steps in a staggered offensive against Google's privacy policy between now and the end of July. It says Google largely ignored earlier recommendations from European regulators.

The French National Commission on Computing and Freedom, known as CNIL, says Spain joined France in the first wave of legal action Thursday, and that Britain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands will join in the coming weeks.

The legal action accelerates a long-running European fight against Google over privacy, which is more rigorously protected in many European countries than in Google's homeland, the United States.

A spokesman for Google said Thursday that it believes its privacy practices respect European laws.

"We have engaged fully with the authorities involved throughout this process, and we'll continue to do so going forward," said Al Verney.

Paris' formal warning gives the company three months to make changes to its privacy practices. They include specifying to users what it is using personal data for, and how long it's held.

Regulators also want Google to let users opt out of having their data centralized ? for example, when data from online searches, Gmail and YouTube are crunched into a single location.

If not, Google risks a fine of up to 300,000 euros by France, which could eventually mean millions of euros in penalties across all six countries. By comparison, Google's revenues were $14 billion in the first quarter of this year, much of that from advertising ? which is boosted by the Internet giant's ability to target users based on what they read, watch and buy online.

In Britain, the Information Commissioner's Office said its investigation into whether Google's privacy policy complies with UK law is still underway and it will soon contact Google about its preliminary findings.

Spain's data protection agency did not have immediate comment on the French statement. The Dutch privacy watchdog, the College for the Protection of Personal Data, said it is investigating Google's "privacy conditions" but spokeswoman Lysette Rutgers declined further comment while the investigation is ongoing.

France's data protection agency led a European investigation last year into Google's privacy policy.

"French law demands that when you're collecting information about someone, you need to collect it for a precise reason," said CNIL president Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin.

She said the outcry about the role of Google and other online players in government surveillance illustrates that users want transparency about where their data goes.

Google's image has suffered since it was identified this month as one of nine U.S. Internet companies that gave the National Security Agency access to data on its customers, as part of the agency's efforts to track foreign threats to U.S. national security. Revelations about the program, known as PRISM, by a former NSA contractor has opened a debate about the privacy of Americans' communications.

In the European privacy dispute, Nick Pickles of Britain-based watchdog Big Brother Watch said, "There's a real worry that (the European fines) won't be a particularly strong deterrent, that Google may see it as a price of doing business."

"People shouldn't be able to ignore people's rights and the law, make huge profits and then continue acting as if nothing was amiss," he said.

Pickles noted that many European countries are limited by laws on data protection that date from before Google was even born 15 years ago.

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding proposed last year that the maximum penalties for privacy matters be raised from the current ?600,000 to 2 percent of a company's global sales.

The legal action could also impact huge trans-Atlantic trade negotiations that President Obama announced on Monday.

In the wake of the NSA data snooping scandal, several EU officials and politicians want data protection issues to be at the heart of the trade talks. The U.S. Ambassador to the EU expressed concern Thursday that privacy issues shouldn't dominate the talks.

I have been toying with the concept of flipping my classroom as well, but face challenges in motivating my weaker pupils to view my screencasts, as well as finding the time and energy to record them after a long day's work.

I appreciate the share, as I am also a teacher using an ipad in the classroom, and am always in the lookout for new and inventive ways to utilize my ipad better.

Help Your Home With Some Home Improvement - Home Reno

You may think that they could never improve your own home. Know that there are lot of projects that someone who is inexperienced can easily master. Home improvements are valuable for a number of reasons, and the article below provides you with some of the things you need to know to be successful.

If you are considering major structural modifications to your floor plan, then employ an architect to draw up your plans. If you don?t have the expertise to back up your vision, your plans are most likely going to be dysfunctional from the start. A professional designer can come up with concrete plans that are viable and that conform to local building codes.

There are two easy things you can do if you would like your ceiling to look higher than it truly is. Add a funky lamp to your room or paint your walls in more than one color. This will make a optical illusion that makes the room seem bigger. Your eyes focus on the lines and make the ceilings look like they are higher.

You can make a huge positive difference in the appearance of a room by installing a new floor in it. A reliable contractor can lay down a new carpet, hardwood or laminate floor in no time at all or, if you are so inclined, look for supplies a a local retailer and do the project yourself.

Use a wet sponge on your drywall installation. Rather than sanding the seams in your drywall, sponge them. A sponge can smooth the seams as effectively as a sander. With the sponge, though, you?ll avoid getting all that drywall dust all over your house.

Apply striping to the walls prior to doing a paneling installation. No matter how careful you are when installing paneling, the old wall still peeks through. To minimize this issue, measure and mark where each panel will meet before installing. Use paint that matches the paneling.

When remodeling the tile floors, consider more high-tech options such as tiles that radiate heat. These are a special form-factor, which allows electricity to create power through a heating element and warm the ground beneath your toes. Radiant heat tiles are easy to install. This makes it a project you can add on whether you are hiring someone or doing it yourself. Either way, you will be thankful that you chose radiant heat tiles on the first cold day of the season.

Purchase transparent plastic bins with lids to help organize your garage properly. Get labels for these boxes, and be sure that they can stack together. This will not only make your garage nice and tidy, but it will also keep pests out of your stuff.

Do not get rid of your doors because they look dirty. You should instead remove the door and then sand down the wood. Then, find an oil that you can paint over the door with. Buy fancier doorknobs if you want to give your door a new feel.

It is possible to give your kitchen a better, more current look without becoming bankrupt in the process. Is your refrigerator still working good? Do you like stainless steel Consider buying appliance spray paint to color your appliances in any hue you can imagine. This can easily change the feel of your kitchen in no more than a day.

Anyone can work on their house if they really try and are dedicated to the process. Now that you have read these tips, you hopefully have gained some confidence in yourself and are ready to tackle your own home improvement projects. Seeing the results of your own handiwork will give you a feeling of pride and accomplishment.

Best cross-platform messaging apps every iPhone owner should know about!

Best cross-platform messaging apps every iPhone owner should know about!

iMore's guide to the best, most reliable, and most widely used cross-platform messaging apps that are available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone.

What will it take to get every app on every platform? That's the question we're asking on Talk Mobile today. When it comes to messaging solutions, there's definitely some fragmentation present. Odds are you have friends that don't have iPhones, but Androids or BlackBerries instead. Since iMessage is exclusive to iOS and OS X, you'll have to find another option to communicate with friends and family on other platforms. While texting is always a viable option domestically, international messaging is still an issue for many.

Here are the messaging apps we think you should check out if you need a better way to communicate with all the Android, BlackBerry, and WindowsPhone users out there.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger for iPhone

If you use Facebook and all your other friends do, Facebook Messenger is an easy and convenient way to converse with friends and family either over WiFi or over the cellular network. Facebook Messenger is a separate app download outside of the regular Facebook app and focuses strictly on messaging.

With support for push notifications, group conversations, and more, it's a message option that your friends are most likely already tied into. Facebook Messenger is currently available for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry.

Whatsapp

Whatsapp for iPhone

Whatsapp has been around for quite a while and provides an easy and free way to send messages. With over 200 million registered Whatsapp users, you may find more people using it than you think. Whatsapp is also available for a broad number of platforms including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Nokia S40, and Symbian. That should about cover any platforms you need to.

Whatsapp also supports unlimited group messaging as well as unlimited audio, video, and photo sharing. It's also got a pretty nice interface which is an added bonus.

Skype

Skype for iPhone

Skype is one of the most widely used platforms on the internet when it comes to audio and video conferencing with over 300 million registered users to date. Let's also not forget that it has pretty good messaging capabilities built right in. Recent updates have also given it a pretty clean and elegant interface as well. Skype also comes equipped with push notifications so you know you're receiving your messages when you need to.

Skype to Skype messaging will be free, anywhere in the world. Skype has apps available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone.

Kik

Kik for iPhone

Kik has been around for quite some time and has a user base of over 50 million users. The thing I really like about Kik is the user interface. It's clean and easy to navigate. Push notifications are super fast and it can automatically pull in anyone you know that's already using Kik, just like Whatsapp can.

Kik may not have as many users as some of the other big guys but it's still a very viable alternative if you don't fancy any of the others and can convince your friends Kik is the way to go. Kik has apps for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Ovi. It's worth noting that the BlackBerry version of the app is not supported by RIM and will need to be downloaded on its own.

Piip

Piip for iPhone

Piip is another cross-platform messaging option that a lot of people forget about. It's got support for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Phone as well as many other devices. While I prefer the interface and design of apps like Skype and Kik better, Piip is also very good at what it does and has a pretty large user base as well.

Piip features include unlimited sending of group messages, message status reports, and photo, video, and audio sharing. Much like the other guys, Piip does what it says it does, and does it well.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)

BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone

BlackBerry Messenger isn't out for iPhone and Android just yet but should be later this summer. RIM has a stellar track record with BBM and it's a service many BlackBerry users past have sorely missed when migrating to other platforms.

We're sure BlackBerry Messenger will be a crowd favorite once it's officially launched for iPhone and Android. If you have a lot of friends using BlackBerries, you'll have instant access to them the minute you download BBM. We'll have a more thorough review of the service as soon as its available later in the summer.

SMS messaging

Text Message iPhone 5

If you're only concerned about sending messages within your home country and don't have a need for international texting, regular SMS may be the best option and it's something that comes equipped on every smartphone nowadays. Not only that, most carriers now bundle unlimited text messages with shared data plans which makes it more attainable than before.

If none of the apps above catch your fancy or you can't get all your friends to jump on board with only one cross-platform messaging solution, native SMS may be the safest bet across the board.

Your picks?

What do you use for either cross-platform messaging or to send international text messages as a cheaper alternative to native SMS? These are some of our favorites but we know, you the readers, find some great ones on your own as well. Let us know in the comments!

The Xbox One Just Got Way Worse, And It's Our Fault

Microsoft just announced that its much-maligned DRM policies won't look at all like they originally had originally been described. They're going to more relaxed, sort of like the PS3's. Good news, you say? No. Bad news. The Xbox One just got worse.
