The Financial Analyst will lead financial support for assigned areas of the business, providing financial statement preparation and financial analysis for American Public Media Group (APMG) and subsidiaries including Minnesota Public Radio & the Fitzgerald Theater, Southern California Public Radio, Classical South Florida, Greenspring, and any other entities within the APM Group. This job description is meant to cover all elements of the Financial Analyst role?note however that, due to multiple positions, not every Financial Analyst position will be responsible for every task below. This role operates in a highly matrixed environment, working closely with various business and Finance leaders. It also involves developing and maintaining excellent relationships with leaders and peers across the organization.
Position Responsibility:
Financial Analyst
? Partner with assigned business units and key constituents and other senior management, Finance managers and staff, department management across the organization to provide thoughtful, thought provoking, action-oriented financial support to assigned business areas. Become an essential advisor to business leaders and help their respective areas succeed.
? Analyze trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to forecast future revenues and expenses. Work in a proactive, anticipatory environment (as opposed to ?reacting? to issues/questions).
? Constructively challenge recommendations about resource utilization and assumptions underlying budgets/forecasts.
? Work with the Finance leadership team and business leaders to develop standardized actionable financial reports for forecasting, trending and results analysis.
? Take ownership of challenges; identify problems and fix them.
? Question and research variances, trends, process improvements, business metrics and business results, and prepare recommendations.
? Participate in the development of new initiatives, providing input and ideas on cost optimization, cost/benefit analysis, budgets, and tracking of results
? Coordinate and review the work of other employees related to financial matters and assist in training new employees on finance related processes and applications. .
? Apply a commercial awareness in the areas of tax, legal contract reviews, state and federal funding requirements, and payroll-related reporting and compliance.
? Prepare/review annual budget and ongoing 18 month rolling financial forecasts pertaining to specific functional areas, including providing monthly income statements from an internal view.
? Develop ad hoc analytics and presentations on key business drivers.
? Lead training for end user support on all planning, budgeting and reporting applications.
? Lead the preparation for the monthly close process as it relates to forecasting.
? Participate in internal audits and/or other risk related activities. This could include leading an internal audit or supplying specific analysis within a risk related activity.
Financial Reporting
? Prepare monthly reports including detailed variance analysis, board/committee reports, and other reports as requested by Finance or Business leaders
? Work with federal and state funding organizations to secure or facilitate funding as required (e.g. with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting?s grant programs); prepare or review applicable financial reporting.
? Coordinate and or complete any necessary accounting entries necessary to support assigned business units.
? Coordinate and or complete any necessary financial reporting to support assigned business units.
? Develop financial models and / or partner with technology personnel to incorporate into APM?s financial applications and reports.
Required Education and Experience:
? Bachelor?s degree in Accounting, Business or related field is required.
? Minimum of 4 years experience in the field.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
? Understanding of fundamental accounting concepts
? Working knowledge of accounting software (Cognos -- planning / reporting, Lawson ? Financials / Activities,)
? Strong budgeting, forecasting and planning skills
? Ability to understand and effectively communicate the complex financial issues concisely and simply to non-financial people but based on detailed analysis. Excellent communication skills.
? Demonstrated ability to apply professional skepticism; demonstrating the curiosity required to provide accurate financial analysis and reports.
? Maintain high standards of customer service and professional ethics.
? This position is responsible for handling highly confidential information, requiring an ability to maintain and display high ethical standards including confidentiality, discretion, and exemplary judgment with respect to such information.

? Ability to use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, planning tools, general ledger, and statistical packages to assemble, manipulates or format some what complex data or reports

Preferred Skills and Experience:
? Knowledge of the media industry. Experience with public radio or other non-profit media companies a plus.
