Today I published a small book of zombie stories, ?Dying Time? on Amazon Kindle. I?d written them years ago, but never did anything with them except show them to to some friends. This is mainly a test before I post self-help articles for my life coaching business, as well as some articles for my writing coaching. I don?t want to post any big articles before I know what I?m doing.
I wrote these stories several years ago and I like them, I think they?re well written and the feed back I got about them was mostly positive. Yet as I was preparing to publish it, I started feeling worried. What if no one liked it? What if I got bad reviews? What if no one bought it?
Fear almost made me stop what I was doing, and forced me to go through editing it all over again. Possibly rewriting 2 of the short stories and holding me up for at least a week or more.
Finally, I faced my fears. I said this was foolish, made a few small changes and published the book.
Recognize Your Fear
If fear is keeping you from doing something the first thing you have to do is recognize it.
I love to write, but I have very little published in my own name. Why is this? Fear of failing as a writer. So long as I wrote for myself and did some copy writing as a ghost writer, I was safe. I couldn?t fail, I?d never succeed, but I wouldn?t fail.
How often does the fear of failure hold you back?
Are you too afraid to talk to a pretty girl? Afraid to ask your boss for a raise? Afraid to tell a toxic friend to leave? Or simply afraid to go out and try something new and interesting?
You may rationalize your fear. You may say ?the girl would just ignore me?, ?the boss is angry and may fire me?, ?my friend is just a little different?, ?I may get hurt.? All of this is simply giving into your fears. Until you realize this you can never overcome it.
The First Step to Overcome Your Fear
Recognizing what you?re afraid of is the first step to defeating your fear.
Over the past year I?ve written a lot. Sometimes posting an article has left me uncomfortable, and a few times I sent a message to a friend asking them to read something as soon as possible to make sure it was good enough to post.
Until late last month though, I was never sure why I was so tense. I didn?t recognize this very obvious fear in me. It?s one reason I haven?t prepared a white paper or big paid article for life coaching, and why I only recently started a weekly news letter.
Now that I know what my fear is, I can face it properly.
I want you to look at your life, and ask yourself if you are achieving your goals. Be honest with yourself. If the answer is no, write down what is holding you back. Look at your fears and see if that is the reason you aren?t happy or successful.
Only by knowing your fears can you face them.
I?m off to write book now.
Cheers
Dan
